One rumor is that back in the early 1900s, you used to win a live turkey when you threw 3 strikes in a row, in some tournament they held. Obviously back then, 3 in row was an accomplishment.

Yes, I really read this somewhere. Whether it's true or not, I cannot say.

charlest,you are correct there was a story recently in BJI that featured some sort of club with it's own lanes and this was in the same story,I can't find the copy but it was only in the last few months.
