neg layout for a senior bowler
« on: May 22, 2012, 09:34:23 PM »
I have a bowler 74 years young lots of hand but slow speed 12 mph.

Wants me to drill a Missing link negative for him what do you think?

he plays on synthetic  lanes light ths and averages 180 + in all his leagues

his spare ball is a lane I plastic with a core drilled neutral and he can hook it on dry lane lots

Negative? People still call it that? Over the middle should be just fine.

It depends on what his PAP is. What pin-PAP distance does he want?
The Missing Links have a good sized amount of Differential- .045". If he's wanting to reduce the flare and get more length, via a longish pin placement, it sounds reasonable.
But you're a driller so you know you need his PAP to make sure this idea works for him.

"Negative" pin position, by itself, means nothing; it could be 3 1/2" pin-PAP or it could be 5 1/2". He probably needs 5 1/2", not 3 1/2", no??

his pap is 5 3/8 by 3/4 up looking at 6 3/4 pin to pap mass bias will be o the left side of his thumb

FWIW In that case, his "negative" sounds reasonable to me.

Slow speed with lots of hand... Tell him to 'kill" the hand?

Layouts and such can compliment, but there is no substitute for relaxing the hand to make ANY ball easier to control. As a senior that may be easier than picking up his ball speed.

Any reactive cover is going to respond fast with that slow speed/rev combination.  A pearl urethane (such as the Avalanche, among others) will respond much slower to friction.  You could even use a slightly stronger layout, too.  Just an idea...

I wouldn't go over 6" pin to PAP, too much chance of reverse flaring and rolling over holes on a missed release.  --  JohnP

With the core shape of the Missing Link, I would go with a 1 inch pin to pap, and put the mb in the track. With how tall the weight block is, the longer you go with the pin from the pap, it's going to get down the lane, but when the weight block stands up, it will be hard. The intermediate diff on that ball is .005, so it's not significant. So just lay that weight block down!

I am not a driller, but it seems to me that anything with a strong core will cause the ball the hook a lot.  If you make the ball harder for him to turn, then he may end up hurting his arm trying to turn the ball.  Have you thought about a ball with a pancake core, like the C300 Scout?

We have a very good senior bowler using a pearl Avalanche in our wet dry center for a couple of years....ping ping ping.  12 mph also.

He recently went to a
Brunswick Versa Max and he shot a 760 the day I saw him and told me he had an 800 the week before.

Think Paul Koehler with slow speed.

Beautiful throwing motion.  I did not see his drilling.

Regards,

Luckylefty
PS recently saw a slow dropper with good hand go negative finger weight as he called it (pin over middle and stacked negative), it worked well for him.  I do not know his PAP however.

If he wants to stay with Global I would recommend the Hook over the missing link. I have both and my Missing Links are sideways off the spot, For me i find the Red/Yellow hook to be much more controllable and predictable. My ball speed is about 13mph on a good day

I am a senior with hand and slow speed also. A C300 Scout will ping ten pins all day long, no matter how often you get to the pocket! I like the idea of the negative finger weight, mentioned above. As for laying the weight block completely down, you'd better really be rev dominant, in order to carry, because that drilling reminds me of a pin axis drilling and is super smooth, with very little pop at the pocket!
