Nemesis or Columbia Detour?
« on: February 21, 2005, 01:05:40 AM »
I've been wanting to get another ball lately because the one I have doesn't seem to be working for me anymore. I have a Storm Flash Flood now that I bought used and was my first "performance ball". It's OK, but I want something different. The Pro Shop guy, Chris, watched me bowl and thought I would do better with a solid ball rather than the particle. I have a low rev rate and faster ball speed, which he would like to see me slow down. He said I need a ball with a lower RG and a higher Diff. I've kinda narrowed it down to 2 balls that he has. A brand new Columbia Detour, which I've heard good things about, and a barely used Brunswick Nemesis, which I also hear good things about. The Nemesis is a ball he said they drilled up just to test and looks to be in almost new shape. The Detour is $190.00 plus a little tax and I'm guessing the Nemesis will be around $100.00. I'm leaning toward the Nemesis because of the cost. Any thoughts on these two balls?

Thanks,
Tony

I have found the Detour to be an excellent ball, although for the price difference it's hard to justify the extra money, knowing that the Nemesis is a good one too.  My only hesitation (I drilled the Detour for myself) was that I had more faith in the Detour's cover stock holding up longer.

The 190.00 price for the Detour is drilled and out the door. Same for the Nemesis. Most of the Pro Shops around here are charging $70.00 to drill a blank ball, so it doesn't really save me much buying a Detour online for $100.00 plus shipping and them spending $70.00 to get it drilled.

I'd go with the nemesis, since it's cheaper and will do the same thing.

In my opinion, the Nemesis and the Detour are not equivalent.

The Nemesis & the Shock are closer. They are more for medium to medium-heavy oil patterns, IN GENERAL.

The Detour is closer to the Bruiser because both are polished. They are more for medium-light to medium oil patterns, IN GENERAL.

If you polished the Nemeis to look like the Detour, it might have some of that same flippiness, but as I said, the Nemesis and the Shock are closer in intended purposes.

now, now, now - let's not start THAT again.
The Nemesis is PK18. NOTHING holds up longer than big b coverstocks - and PK18 is the longest holding up of any of them!!!
If you clean your stuff regularly, no current coverstocks should wear out. But when big b stuff gets oil soaked, it responds wonderfully to rejuvenation. I have several balls in the closet that were retired with honors - but none of them were retired because they wore out. A smash/R, danger zone, and speed zone - all big b, all with easily 1000 games or more.

Just an update. I decided on the Detour. Tried it tonight at our Monday League. I didn't do to well. Didn't even make my average! I think I'm trying to change too many things at once. I'm a little impatient I guess. I'm working on a new approach, hand position, and a new ball all at once. I just need to slow down a bit. I've only be bowling since last November and I just want things to improve too fast. It sure was a bubble buster to do so bad tonight after getting all hipped up over a new ball though. I hope the ball doesn't turn into a $200 door stop! Thanks for all the help in choosing the ball. I know it will get better in time.

Thanks,
Tony

I see the Detour and the Nemesis as fairly similar balls both with great and durable coverstock.

both will work awesome on blended league style lanes with medium oil.

Big backends on both balls.

I had a Detour!  It WAS big and sharp at the back!!
