Never heard of it!

Anyone know about a synthetic covering that bowling alleys put over the lanes? Not a synthetic lane, but an actual cover that sits over the boards?

Yes guardian is a sunthetic overlay designed by Brunswick back in the earlier reactive and urethane days but before particle technology was prominant.  Particle balls shred it up.  It was a cheaper alternative to full lane replacement for old wood houses that couldn't be resurfaced anymore.  Those are the basics I am not a tech head when it comes to lane surfaces.

Ok, so what would be a good ball type that would react well on this random surface?

(going to visit friends in Minnesota and their lane uses this. Need something that's gonna drop jaws)

Minnesota?  That's not Guardian, that's ice.

My experience with guardian (it's poop) is that the heads burn up fast, but there will still be some oil in the second 20 feet of the lane.  So you need something that will get through the front part of the lane with good recovery.

I really can't stand this but I am not goign to shoot off.  All I will say is all balls roll good on all surface if the right oil conditons are present. Doesn't matter if its wood, synthetic, combo, guardian.  Balls are designed for oil not for lane surfaces.  Now it is true some carrydown faster and more than others and such but then again we are still talking oil there too.

Guardian is not only very soft, it is also susceptible to creating out of bounds and to carrydown. WHat you need depends on how much oil they apply and what type of balls people use on it (breakdown), and how you play. Strong backend pearls that clear the heads and can be used to go around the carydown have worked when we suffered with the Guardian overlay. These pearls can be like the PRo Stock Pearl or the Recharge but not like the Ace (too strong, too early) in the 2nd and 3rd game. In the first game plus, yo umay need a ball for the original oil amount and pattern. Breakdown can be very treacherous. If you can start with the right ball, you may need to move your feet only[/] 15 or so boards during the course of those 3 games.

Lane Shield- Never seen it, so I've never bowled on it but have heard good things about it.
According to bowltech.com members, it has a life expectancy of anywhere from 10-20 years, depending on maintenance of course.
Brunswick's website has information on the Lane Shield.
