Practicing During Open Play
« on: February 14, 2013, 04:37:30 PM »
I know most of the below avg bowlers like me need to practice but I find it hard to practice during open play because they keep putting these none league people right next to me... They have never heard of lane courtesy and really trying to have a good time... ( The price they pay they should have a blast )..  Does this bother anybody else or should that be apart of my practice as well..

I plan for that happening, and it does irritate me sometimes.  I have had people kicked out before.  One time was when a group of teenagers kept horsing around, throwing balls all over the place and in one case throwing a ball so hard to where it cracked a sweep when it was down.  The front counter then turned off their pair and were told to not come back.

The other instance was when a big family was doing one of those $12 for 2 hrs unlimited bowling at an AMF house.  That is worse because most of the AMF management never cares- they just want people packing their houses.  In this instance, the family had kids running around all over the place and kept trying to take my 2 lanes that I paid for.  They were getting in my approaches, touching my equipment and even being nice and telling them to stay on their pair didn't work.  Eventually, they were thrown out after they did the same on the opposite pair as well.  The only reason is because I know the staff there since their pro shop drills my stuff.

I just plan for it and I'll take extra time during shots as needed.  I just try to keep a level head about it, and it does help with focusing on what I need to do.  This helps when it comes to league nights.

However, if you start going on to the pair of lanes I paid for, touching my equipment, and being a total jerk, then that's a whole separate issue.  I will make it very well known to management if being nice doesn't work.  Even more so if it becomes a safety issue.

Use this to your advantage. Try to block them out and work on concentrating more and staying focused.

you could always ask for a pair at either end of the house.

if open bowlers are bothering you during a practice session you gotta have a better mental game than that. in your case this is the best environment for you to practice in

The best practice you're going to get is during late night glow bowling. Oil dries up, a lot of loud noise, and you can't get a consistent visual of your target.

I say this because it makes you bowl more accurately, and you have to know where you are sending the ball. The noise makes you get used to sound while you are bowling.

I actually promote being loud during bowling when I'm up, and have had people run along on the pairs beside me while in mid-swing just to make myself not break focus.

I have, however, had to have managerial intervention because kids kept running onto my lane while I was up, and one ended up getting hit while I was in backswing. Bad day right there, but the fault goes to the parents.

I used to bowl late Saturday nights before I started bowling leagues.  A house full of drunk college kids teaches concentration real quick.  I agree, if there is a chance for damaging equipment or causing injury, it's gotta stop.  Harmless chaos, on the other hand, can be a great practice tool.  Nowadays, when I can practice, I might grab an end lane, and tell the desk to just run back on lane calls without regard for waiting for me to bowl-I want that test on my focus.
Stop being the problem, and start being part of the solution
