New ball
« on: January 20, 2014, 11:51:42 PM »
Hi everyone, I use to bowl in high school..i still bowl every now and again. I'm looking to buy a new ball just having a hard time choosing. In the past I've had success with brunswick radical inferno, ultimate inferno, columbia icon2..there's other.

I'm looking at Columbia crazy antics, storm mastermind,  dv8 ruckus, dv8 endless nightmare, pyramid chosen path acid, storm manic, etc..
Any recommendations? I don't know a whole lot about the dv8 brand.

I think you're looking a little too high on the totem pole of balls. I'd go something that's more considered in the middle price point. I'd look to Radicals EZ use line Torrid Affair or Grease Monkey. Also Storm/Rotos Hyroad, Crossroad, Wrecker, Rumble, Lights Out

Averaged 212-215 in high school but it's been like 5 years, I've heard some good things about storm hyroad

Game has changed quite a bit in 5 years equipment wise. Most people don't need the "high performance" balls to score well unless they are bowling on sport shots or get lucky and have a lot of oil

talk to your local pro shop. tell them what kind of shot you want to throw, get a quote.  go home, research that ball, watch the reaction videos, see comparable balls' videos, check online prices (don't forget to add the cost of drilling), and order the one that best suits you either online, or from the local.

better yet, have price point in mind before you go to the proshop
then work from there.
easily can get a great ball for 175 drilled
hammer and columbia have some great pieces out there

I recently bought a Hammer Nail Titanium---a good ball for most house shots. I paid $180.00 which included full inserts and a thumb insert on another ball.

I'm very interested in rotogrip disturbed, columbia 300 takedown,
I think I may want something more snappy toward the backend. I don't really care how much the cost is.

Personally, I love my Hyper Cell.  Quite aggressive.   Asylum looks good.  The Amp series from hammer looks good to me, and the new Covert from MOTIV.  There are a lot of good pieces.

What conditions are you bowling on?

The Disturbed will not be snappy. Its a hard arc with Heavy Roll....Great ball

Asylum is a bot more versatile and a bit stronger on backend, but still not snappy...Great Ball

IQTour fusion coming in the next 10 days....will be a bit more backend and looks like a great ball

The Radical Torrid Affair uses the same general core shape as the Infernos on a medium strength solid cover.  It will definitely be a solid benchmark ball

Since I only throw storm/roto, I will speak to that. The lucid is a surprisingly rolly pearl ball and will need some oil unless you don't have a lot of revs. For a THS you would be better off with mid-line ball. I recently got on the Hyroad bandwagon and wish I had sooner. Very versatile ball and extremely predictable. Its very easy to use this ball for a 3 game set with simple moves as the lanes break down. I don't see that being the case if you buy a Lucid unless you also plan on investing in a second ball. I have also had great luck with my Frantic. Other Storm/roto to consider would be Lights out, IQ Tour Pearl, IQ Tour Fusion (out in two weeks), Roto Rumble, Asylum or Wrecker. It really depends on what volume of oil you will be bowling on and your physical game.

Yeah I've talked myself out of the lucid. I believe it's too aggressive for a ths. Well I throw about 15-16 mph on average..and I hate to put it this way, but maybe slightly above "average" rev rate. I'm going to go with the hyroad, asylum or iq tour pearl..now just to decide. I'm sure I'll get another ball sometime in the next couple months too
