BEST CONDITION FOR BALL
« on: December 27, 2003, 07:53:02 PM »
I recently bought a new ball (not unusual I buy a lot) and did some investigating prior to purchase. Before a ball is released the most you can read is people who have TEST BALLS (I don't know how they get them but it doesn't matter). They (testers) give their ideas of how the ball reacts. I was sure that this GN was the ball for me. Testers led ME to believe that the ball could be used by ALL LEAGUE BOWLERS and on MOST CONDITIONS. In my mind I figure they finally produced a VERSATILE ball. I BUY IT. My findings are that it wasn't as versatile as I EXPECTED. Now the ball is released and I go look at the companies advertisement and I don't see THE BEST CONDITION FOR THE BALL defined. Yet bowlers from this site explain that the ball is designed for a PARTICULAR condition .. what I want to know is .. if these bowlers KNOW this why doesn't the manufacturer tell us this info? Here is the advertisement I see:

I know where you are coming from Joe. I guess I missunderstood what poeple were saying about the nugget, because I thought it was made for medium heavy, to medium light oil. I talk my Sister in law into buying one for my nephew(217 ave) thinking it would be the perfect first ball for him on the conditions we bowl on. He gets the ball drilled up and subs on my team during league friday night so he can try it out. He couldn't really use it until half way through the second game, after the lanes started breaking down. Don't get me wrong, the ball hit harder than anything I have seen in the past, including my Inferno. But since he won't be able to even use it til probably the third game in most of his leagues, it was a waste of 250 bucks, when she could have gotten him a ball better suited for much less. Like I said I guess I missread what the ball is good for.

I find it difficult to believe that a bowler can choose a ball WITHOUT the manufacturer defining WHAT CONDITION the ball is best used under.

Buc, if that $250 includes drilling, you paid $60 too much over what you could have got that ball for from Doug Sterner complete with ball, drilled and shipped. I know as I just bought one from him.

Yeah Brickguy. I didn't pay for it though. Plus I told my sister in law about a week before I found out about Doug's deal on the ball. I called her as soon as I found out and she had all ready purchased one through the pawn shop the day before. So I call the pawn shop and tell him about the deal so he could pass it on to others and he had no interest in buying any more. I'm stuck in a county with an idiot for a pro shop owner. lol

sawbone,

That has got to be the best idea I have ever heard. Why in the he11 didn't I think of doing that?

Joe,

Part of the problem is that we let ourselves get so sucked up into the "Madison Ave" hype of a new ball. I suspect many of us finding we want the ball almost no matter what it is supposed to do. May I suggest you read the posts currently being done on "BTM"? Even these ball reviews can be very misleading.

I am not preaching from a pulpit; I am in the pits. I can't tell you how much money I have pissed away, buying the "latest and the greatest"! It's hard not to.

While I get sucked in a lot less these days, I still do. BUT more often, I wait until a lot of tests are done everywhere, until people here (and elsewhere) post lots of reviews, until I have seen people throw it in leagues and tournaments, then I take the plunge. ANd you know, even then, sometimes, I drill it wrong for me, for the oil pattern.

Live and learn, sometimes, the hard way.

I recently, for the first time, drilled up a Columbia Power Surge, a Brunswick Fire Quantum and have a NIB Faball Truck waiting to be drilled. Still thinking about that one.

it is a crap shoot most of the time. the best company I used that defines there equipment with accuracy is Visionary. I can buy with confidence as I seam to be able to match up just like they say.

the biggest pro-buyer setup is Ebonite demo days. you throw 8 balls and see where every thing fits in with your game. that sure makes it easy for me to buy a ball for a condition when I just threw 8 of them side by side.

I was thinking of getting a GN but I am more confused then ever about this ball. I really want a Pearl particle that clears the fronts and pops on the backend. I though this was the ball but I'm afraid to buy one after the mixed reviews.

Best advice I've seen from SAWBONES .. THANKS .. I understand your point .. what I don't understand is the COMPANIES advertisement .. from what I remember BEST CONDITION for a ball was always provided .. I know some bowlers always came back and disagreed .. BUT ..with the company offering THEIR THOUGHTS .. a bowler had some direction .. now .. IT REALLY LEAVES YOU HANGING. Contacting the company is probable the answer .. maybe if enough bowlers call .. perhaps they will start telling us in the advertisement what we SHOULD BE TOLD!!

Thanks for your comments!
