New Ball Choice

Well I'm currently looking for a new ball to throw as my primary. My style would be considered a stroker (I think) and I'm looking for a new ball. I currently use a Columbia 300 Wrath SF which I like but I just want to try something new...The ball I have been looking at very closely is the Roto Grip Cell.  I Just wanted to get some opinions from other more experienced bowlers.

Well I'm looking at buying one off of ebay and they have the Pro CG Cell on there for cheaper than the retail. So what does the Pro CG really mean and do? Would it be suitable for me to get a Pro CG or should i just get a normal one?

So you think you are a stroker... Being a "stroker" usually means low speed and low revs. What do you mean by a "primary" ball? What type of reaction would you like?

I think i'm pretty much in between a stroker and a tweener. I'm closer to a stroker though. I've watched some videos on Youtube with a player using the Cell throwing it as a stroker, tweener and cranker. The 2 videos are listed below. I would like a strong back end reaction which is what the cell does if i'm not mistaken. For the what do you mean as a "Primary Ball" i mean by it being my strike ball for my league play.

 Cobb,

  While not trying to sound demeaning in any way, the questions you are asking are pretty basic.  That leads me to believe that you have a limited knowledge of the "new" equipment.  There are so many different balls out there, with so many specific qualities, that it is next to impossible to recommend a ball to you merely by knowing what you have now.

  If you could tell us what type of lanes you play on, the volume of oil and type they use, and ALL the specifics of your release and velocity, then someone might be able to make an educated guess.  Until then, it would just be a shot in the dark.

  The cell is a good ball, but it is very different from your wrath sf.  If you just want something to be a straight replacement for the wrath sf, someone might be able to get reasonably close, MAYBE.  If you want something totally different, then it is an almost impossible task.

  And, as far as the "pro" cg thing, it just means that, if you draw a line from the pin to the mass bias, the cg will be off the line in one direction or the other.  With your limited knowledge of balls, unless you have an excellent driller, I would recommend staying away from the "pro" cg balls.  They are good, but can be a headache to drill, depending on how much the cg is offset and in which direction.

K for as specifics i play on a normal 39' lane with usually heavy oil down. As for specifics to my release and velocity i'm not sure because I'm just getting back into bowling again and i don't know all the technical jargan with PAP and all that stuff. All I can say is that my throw with my wrath is very similar to the stroker video. Except i stand quite a few more boards over to the right instead of in the middle like the video.  I'm trying to find a ball with a bit more hook on the lanes. I bowl for fun at another lane that has drier conditions and my wrath works great there, i get the hook i want. When i bowl league at a different lane it just doesn't react the way i want it to. That's why i was looking into a ball that would react better on heavily oiled lanes.  Thank you for answering my question about the Pro CG thing, i'll just stick to standard ones.  Also would the Cell or the Cell Pearl be a better choice?? All i see different is the coverstock?

Stroker means you are more or less speed dominant as opposed to being evenly matched (tweaner) or rev dominant (cranker).  

If you had both a lower speed and revs you could still be a tweaner..  Either way though, the cell is a versitale ball.  Depending on the layout and surface prep you choose it can match up to all three types of bowler's game reguardless of speed and revs.

Just out of curiosity, if you have 450+ rev rate and ball speed is 20 mph, are you still a tweener?  A cranker is not necessarily rev dominate.  Being labeled a stroker, tweener, and cranker has nothing to do with ball speed.  Does that also mean that if you are have low revs and low speed (180 rev rate and 14 mph) that you are a tweener?  

A stroker, tweener, and cranker is solely based on rev rate.  A stroker is anything less than 275 rev rate.  A tweener is anything between 275-375.  A cranker is basically anything above that.  

NOW, you can be a speed dominate tweener or rev dominate tweener.  You can also be a speed dominate stroker (clean mind you guys ) A speed dominate cranker is rare.

With all that being said, on heavier oil, the Cell is a great ball.  However, there is a hidden gem out there that Columbia has called a Momentum Swing.  I think that it would give you a great 1-2 punch with the Wrath SF.  Use the Momentum Swing on the heavier stuff and when it becomes too much, switch to the Wrath SF.  Two awesome balls by Columbia.

I can say the Columbia Momentum series of balls are excellent.

I have the original Momentum and it is phenominal. It seems like your looking for something a little stronger, so the Momentum Swing might be a good choice.  The Resurgence is probably a little too strong for what your used too, but the Momentum Swing may very well do what you want.

Really depends on what surface and how much oil is being put out.  Most of the time the Cell is too much ball.

Alright so say it's between the Cell and the Cell Pearl? Which ball? I'm currently leaning more towards the Cell just because it doesn't have as much length as the Pearl.

Its only money and both balls are GREAT. Pick one, drill it up, use it. If you dont like it get the other. But you will have two balls for when you want to try something else.

However, I am betting you will like the cell more.
