6 man teams in league
« on: October 11, 2008, 04:55:08 AM »
To make a long story short, after losing a bunch of new guys, we may merge some teams together to get full lineups. A couple of teams may end up with a sixth man instead of the normal 5.
The word is they (6 man teams) will simply throw out the lowest score every week.
It seems to me that that would give them a definate advantage throwing out the score of which ever bowler happens to have the bad game.
I wouldn't have a problem if they would name the score to be thrown out ahead of time, before the game started, to me that would be fair.

Is this fair??? Legal??? Am I missing something here?????

This throws a huge wrinkle into the mix. The league would have to pass it unanimously by all the captains.

Why don't those 6 man teams just rotate 5 guys instead of bowling 6 every week. With 6 guys on a team, I'm sure that some can't make it every week. They should split the weekly dues as well as the price fund based on what they paid in.

You have to remember that the house is going to want lineage out of that 6th player. Why would anyone want to pay lineage if their scores don't count.

You can also make those 2-3 bowlers into floating subs.

If it does pass then they should throw out the 3rd best game of every series, not the worst. IMO.

My thinking was to rotate the line up of the teams with 6 guys also. That would be the fairest way to do it.

Tossing the third best score also seems pretty fair. I'll keep that suggestion in mind.

We have lost so many guys, and have quite a few teams with 4,3,and even 2 players, that something needs to be done.

We'll probably have a meeting this week about merging teams, just looking for some suggestions.

I think they're talking having the low series bowler sit out of the next week's match.  I've known several teams that do that and it works pretty well.  If the bowlers are all in the same average range it can be done scratch, otherwise it should be done handicap.  The difficulty comes in splitting the prize money at the end of the league since each bowler hasn't put in the same amount. --  JohnP

Prize money is easy.
Total prize money divided by total number of games bowled=X. (combined number of games by all players receiving monies.)
Multiply X by each individuals total games will give you a per person payout.

So you wouldn't take into account how many points were won when each bowler paid?  --  JohnP

We've had a 6 man team for 4 years.  We just sit out every 6th week and when playoffs come around the 5 highest averages bowl.  Why would they even think about bowling all 6 in one night?  That's just insane.

Here are a couple of things to consider:
1) 12 guys bowling instead of 10. Around here 5 man team leagues are taking 3-3.5 hours to bowl there 3 game sets. Now add in two more bowlers to the mix and you get the point.
2) The center is probably not going to let you have 6 extra games per pair without a fee for it.
3) Pace of play. If you think 10 on a pair is slow death, try 12. I bowled a New Years day mixed doubles last year and somehow we got stuck with 12 on our pair for a 4 game qualifier. It took us 5+ hours to get thru the qualifying. YAWN!!!

In one of my leagues I bowl on a 7-man team.  Everyone bowls every 5 of 7 weeks, has worked out fine thus far.  Having the extra guy actually bowl and just toss out scores doesn't seem right.  Set some sort of rotation and go with that.

Turns out that enough guys quit to give us an even 50 players. 10 teams. Just merged a couple of them that were short on players.

Don't know.
I know one player on my team left due to the birth of a baby. We had almost 50 returning players from last year, and after some discussion, decided to let 12 new members in. I thought they should keep the same players from last year, and put any new members on a waiting list if a spot became available.
Anyhow, almost all 12 of the new guys quit within the first 3 weeks. Some never even showed up at all.
