Need advice on new ball.
« on: July 13, 2003, 09:12:47 PM »
Well, it is that time again.  I am in need of a ball to fill a gap and I need any and all advice you guys can offer. I am not going to post this under a specific company because I am not partial one way of the other.  I will throw any equipment.

I am currently using a Columbia WOW as my main heavy oil ball.  I love this ball and the movement it gives me.  Below this I am using a bargian priced AMF Menace Pearl which was an eBay special.  I also love the movement this ball gives me.  Both balls are drilled in the "strong" position.  The pin is at 1:30 in relation to the ring finger and everything is stacked beneath with the MB right of the thumb.  The problem is, the Menace is not strong enough to be my 2nd tier ball.  I need something to fill the gap between the WOW and the Menace.

I am by no means "rev challenged" so I don't need something that is going to do all the work for me.  If I was to get another really strong ball, it would probably sit in the corner.  I don't have nearly enough money to buy a few balls before I get it right, so I am going to study hard before I make a purchase.  If you guys can give any advice, it would be greatly appreciated.

If you need any other info, let me know.  I know that filling a gap can be the toughest thing in bowling.  Thanks.

One thing I am worried about with the Inferno is it would be too strong.  That is my main concern with buying a ball to "fill a gap".  I get great movement on the backend with the WOW.  That is what I love about the WOW.  It gets down the lane with a nice "arc" motion until the backend where it makes a nice hard backend move to the pocket.  I can miss either way a few boards (which I still do) and it recovers very nicely.  I will look into the WOW pearl as I have not really read anything about it.  Thanks for your advice!!

As the other's have said...if you like the WOW, get the WOW Pearl.  Good 1-2 punch!  If you want to try something else I would put my vote in for Storm's X-Factor, Ebonite's Vortex 2 Blue/Black (polished up ofcourse) or waiting for their TPS Player to hit the market.  There are a few other offerings but know seeing exactly what your game is like I'm hesitant to suggest them...case in point; Storm's Hot Rod.  This ball seems to be user specific, much like Columbia's Wicked was.

I think a Columbia 300 Rev or Wicked would work for you..

TTT...

Thanks a lot for all the advice/suggestions.  Like I said before, I am going to take all of this info and read about all the balls and their reviews (the ones that actually mean something) and then I will make a decision.  Keep it coming guys.  Thanks again.

You already have a particle and a pearl, how about a solid resin like the Roto Grip Silver Streak?  I have the pearl.  Very strong hit at a midlevel price.

My suggestion would be the Cherry Bomb. It will hit harder than any I have seen suggested.  With your hand, it will be the ideal ball, IMHO.  Check it out by contacting Doug Sterner at dougsproshop@aol.com  and tell him I told you to ask.

Thanks again to everyone who has responded.  I am adding to the list that I am going to evaluate before making my purchase.

Strider - I have seen the Silver Streaks in action and again, I am afraid they might be too strong.  My best friend Eddie (I think he bowled with you down in Mobile when he was stationed in Mississippi in the Navy) throws the SS Pearl and it is stronger than he planned on it being.  I don't want anything that is going to be too strong.

Go with an Ebonite Vortex 2 solid. It is a very versatile ball. With what you are throwing now, I would suggest to polish the V2, then have it litely saned with a grey scotchbrite pad (800 grit). It would be a great fit in between the equipment you have now. Not as big of a movement (or as early) as the WOW, but with more movement than the pearl menace (and a little sooner).
I had one about a year ago and traded it away. Sure wish I hadn't. It is a great ball at a great price point.
Good luck

As if you didn't have enough choices already, I'd like to toss the Brunswick Monster SmashR into the mix.  It can be fairly strong in box condition, but the cover is very tweakable.  And it's relatively inexpensive.

Marvin,

While I haven't thrown the SS solid, Roger from Roto Grip said it wasn't much stronger than the pearl, just started a little earlier and handled a bit more oil.  The WOW wants to grab and roll early.  The SS would give more length and backend.  Others have given you a lot of good choices, no sense on taking a chance on the SS being too strong.  If you want a decent ball and don't want to spend much, I have a Messenger Titanium I could sell you cheap.

Yes I know Eddie.  I haven't seen him post in quite a while.  How is he doing?
