New Ball vs Used Ball
« on: May 05, 2010, 12:47:05 AM »
Just wanted you opinion on used balls vs new balls...

A used ball is drill for someone else and they bought it according to what they wanted the ball to do.  I know we expect great scores with any ball but wouldn't you have even better scores with a new ball designed for you?

3 weeks ago I shot 800 with a used ball I bought off here for $40 shipped.. I changed out the grips and re-slugged the thumb.. I wasn''t expecting that kind of score, but you just never know..

I have bought probably close to 100 used balls off here over the years and normally sell them off when I want to try something else. I just look for balls with layouts that I like or want to try..

IMO, there is nothing at all wrong with buying used balls.. In my bag right now I have 2 used balls I bought here..

I threw my 2nd 300 this year with a used ball. Just had the thumb moved to increase the span a bit. I got it toward the end of the season and I think I averaged over 220 with it for the last few weeks of league. Depends on the ball and how close it's drilled to match your game. Just my opinion.

Are you asking about a ball that is drilled for someone with a PAP different than yours and you will only be adjusting the span or finger/thumb size on the ball?

I have a Immortal Pearl that is drilled for a different pap and adjusted for my span and it rolls well in the right conditions.

One man's junk is another man's treasure.

If you can find a ball with the RG, Diff, Coverstock, and drilling that works for you, why not buy one used, plug the thumb and redrill it to your specs ?

As long as you don't require different finger pitches, you can just put new grips in and away you go.  I buy all my stuff used anymore.  $20-$30 plus $10 to plug and redrill the thumb is much better than $200. Especially when you can find some used balls with very low mileage.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with buying used equipment.  There is a guy who bought a rising, uprising and kinetic pearl from me for 50$ each.  He's shot 300 with each and 800 with two of them.

I bought a rogue cell from him and shot 300 with it....

If it's the drilling pattern you're concerned with, you can always plug and redrill according to your own specs.

Usually though, it isn't too hard to find something very close to what I am looking to do, and close to the type of ball I'm looking for.

For example, a few years ago I wanted to try the Activator coverstock from Brunswick, so I started looking around. I liked pin low drillings, and pretty soon I found an Inferno (Activator cover) with a pin down drilling and specs very close to mine. I gave $40 for the ball, including shipping.

I plugged the thumb and fingers. The only reason I plugged the fingers was to allow for a smooth redrilling of the holes for inserts ( it had none previously). After redrilling, I began to shoot BIG numbers with it, and eventually shot the only 800 series I've ever had.

If you look around and be patient, you can often find exactly what you're looking for at a significant savings, if you're willing to buy used.

Shooting high scores with a used ball is not that big of a deal.. If your a decent bowler, it makes no difference if the ball is drilled for you or not..

Thats my feeling on it..

It seems that most people buy a ball form someone else, maybe plug the thumb or something and use as is. Why not plug and re drill for your game. I use used balls at times to, but I always plug and re drill. To me it makes no sense once so ever to buy a ball and leave it drilled for the previous owner. For the record, I am not bashing anyone, I just don't understand why anyone would not take the time and fit the ball to their game.

I agree nothing wrong with used gear but dont you think if you bought a new ball drilled and setup the way you wanted would give you better results with lss work..  I have heard this several time but getting a ball plugged and redill a few times takes away from the ball...  Dont know if this is true or not

I guess I have to ask..what are you asking?  One drill, two drills, left hand, right hand drillings, etc.

I guess what I am saying - Is buying a used ball worth buying after making the neccessary adjustment vs getting a ball that is already designed the way you want it...

I think so.  99% of the time you will spend significatnly less than you would for a brand new ball out of the proshop.

If you can afford new gear at $200+ by all means do that, but if you are low on cash or like to try a lot of different balls, used is the way to go.  My span is 5-1/16.  Pretty much any used ball I find, I'll have to at least plug the thumb and move it, but you can always plug the whole thing and lay it out the way you want.  It won't affect the ball that much unless you're talking 3+ drills and even then, many people have had success with swiss cheese balls.  I would try to stay away from balls that would end up having plug in your track area, but that's just my preferance.

Don't be afraid of used gear.  Just look for something you like with as little mileage as possible and if the layout and/or grip work for you its a bonus.
