Thumb First
« on: July 25, 2008, 01:25:37 PM »
Earlier this week I was reading an article about various ways in gripping the ball.  The article talked about the two different practices of inserting the fingers and the thumb.  It went on to state that the most common practice was to insert the fingers into the ball followed by the thumb.  The second method was to insert the thumb first followed by the fingers which they stated would reduce grip pressure.  The writer of the article stated that he became curious about the technique after hearing Tommy Jones discuss the topic.  After trying the technique he claimed it was an effective way of reducing grip pressure and ensuring a cleaner/softer release, especially effective on the outside part of the lane and for shorter patterns.

Well I gave it a try today and I have to say I liked the feeling it gave me in releasing the ball.  Anyone else have any thoughts or experiences regarding thumb in first??

Thanks……

I think it just feels very awkward, I don't really know if it is for everyone either. I have heard of many that cannot get their fingers in the ball with their thumbs already inserted. I do know it seems to lessen the feel of my fingers in the ball and it just doesn't feel right.

I've always put my thumb in first...I don't know if it actually helps with the release.  It's just part of my pre-shot routine that I've had for years.  It looks exactly like Tommy Jones (almost looks like I'm screwing my thumb into the hole and then setting my fingers)...although I've been doing it since I was about 15!

i could never put the fingers in first, if i do it, i cannot secure my grip, which results in a very bad feeling

When a house bowler misses the mark, misses the break point and strike, for many ppl its called a wallshot. When a pro does that its call adjustment

When a house bowler gets his finger stuck in the ball and fall on the lanes, for many ppl its called lame bowler. When a pro does that its called the Machuga flop! ha i like this one.
