Ball weight and pin carry

I know this comes up fairly often, but I'm curious about how ball weight affects pin carry.  I thought there was a USBC study done about it, or some other research that found that pin carry with a 14lb ball was just as good as 15 and 16lb balls, but I can't find it anywhere.

Anybody know where I can find it, or have any real world experience to share?

Some good stuff here.

Does anybody remember a study, paper, or any research about this?  Maybe I imagined it or something?  Or maybe I read it in a book that referenced it?  Just curious if anything scientific was done on this topic.  I know they did the CG study, studies on the oil absorbing coverstocks, and other stuff, but can't find anything about carry and ball weights.

It is debatable but my father dropped from 16 to 14 pound equipment and went from ONE 300 game in his lifetime to 3 perfect games this year. My I am still chasing the dream.

On the PBA tour 16lb. balls are called, "man weight".

I have mostly 15lbers.  I bought a 16 for ball carry, but was a wimp and got tired for some reason.  Sold the 16.  Messed up my wrist, went to a 14...gave me more control, but of course, more speed.  If I bowl inside with the 14, I can strike well because of the extra revs I can get as well.  But I have to be conscious on ball speed.  Went back to a 15 with my newest ball and I've blended out both styles and have been doing well.  I still threw my 14 the other day in practice and had an over 200 game where I didnt with my 15...I think it depends on the day and the weather as to how you throw.  That and how many beers you suck down. LOL!

I don't see where it matters much.  14-16# all hit very good.  Pick the weight that you throw best and stick with it.  I bet over 99% of bowlers can't switch back and forth on weights effectively.  If 15# is ideal for you, you'd probably struggle to throw 16# as well, and muscle 14# a bit.  If you're fairly athletic and you bowl on mostly easy patterns, you could probably switch back and forth if you thought it gave you an advantage, whether it was real or not.  On a tougher condition, not having your hand in the correct position or muscling the ball will cause you errors that better potential pin carry couldn't out weigh.

My two cents, just went back up to 15 from 14, I definitely carry better with 15lbs.

The study shows 16 strikes better.

Isn't the formula =mass X v2.  Velocity squared that is!

My little bit of eperience with trying 15 and 16 is....the following.

15 hits great with lighter pins and strong backends.

16 hits better with heavy pins, slow speeds and carrydown!

PS years ago my pro accidently got in a 16 pound ball for me that was suppossed to be 15 and drilled it!  I was not happy but went out and threw a practice 299!  The game was so mediocre as far as the flushness in the pocket I was not sure if my 15 would have thrown a 210! But that 16 was carrying that day!
