Typical League Average Breakdown
« on: February 16, 2010, 05:58:37 AM »
I went through my league standings and did a little tabulating.  This is a mens travel league that bowls once a month a 7 different houses in small to medium sized towns in east Texas (Longview, Greenville, Rowlett).  We do not bowl in any major cities like Dallas, so no main stream corporate houses.

16 teams of 5 members but rosters can have 8 members so there are 98 bowlers listed.  All of these bowlers have bowled this year several years so there are no beginning bowlers that I am aware of.

220+ - 1
210-220 - 6
200-210 - 18
190-199 - 28
180-189 - 18
170-179 - 19
169& below - 8

45% of bowlers average below 190
54% of bowlers average above 190

65% average between 180 & 210

27% average below 180
25% average above 199

I wonder if this league represents a broad view of bowling in general?

Laddie, now you and I know this is not a good representation of the TALENT of this league!!  Most all those 180-189 and 190-199 bowlers are 200-220 average bowlers.  Sandbagging is rampant in the TCBA travel leagues.  In order to keep teams together, have a stacked team to win the whole thing, strategic average adjustment is very common.

upon edit, sorry didn''t read down farther before posting!!

Well, you actually carried through. I have to give you that. So at least in the Detroit area, you found that 65% of leagues are mixed leagues.

This certainly validates my statement that "Most adult leagues are mixed handicap".

One reason I had no doubt is the distribution of averages in league bowling. The median average for men is around 165. For women, it is about 140. These are recent statistics published by John Jowdy:

http://www.bowlingdigital.com/bowl/node/7204

I know similar numbers had been published by the USBC, but their website is so messed up it's hard to find anything with new format. Anyway, there has to be a majority of mixed handicap to cater to this segment.

I'm surprised that Detroit only has one scratch league. Detroit has a reputation for being the hotbed of bowling, but I guess that doesn't translate to competitive scratch. Maybe I shouldn't be surprised. A new guy who just relocated from Atlanta is subbing in our scratch league, and he says there aren't any scratch leagues there at all. It's hard to imagine that such large population areas are almost all handicap only.
