New Bowling Ball Reviews Website - [Questions?]
« on: December 28, 2009, 03:02:55 AM »
I may be willing to get a bowling ball reviews website up just like what Bill had, except updated in terms of appearance and features.

It would require a lot of work and some minor financial backing (approx $100).

PM me if you''re interested in contributing to this new project.

I would go through the archive.org''s bowlingballreviews.com site to import all of the old bowling ball information.

Also, I would plan on going through a community process of buttoning down a review template and a ball spec template.

I would ask BallReviews.com members and other major websites what would be most important in terms of information for the ball and for the review.

Please let me know if this would be of interest.
BowlingBallReviews.com on archive.org will only serve the community in terms of old, obsolete bowling balls.

Have you dug deep on archive.org?

To save space on their servers it seems quite a bit of graphic data was dropped from BBR.com, so you're going to be limited in what you can "import"

Thats fine, im sure you could find an image of the ball somewhere else on the interwebs.

I'd like to get this new website conversation going to see if it has legitimate legs.
I'd like to get a bowling ball review site going thats done correctly.
This site's reviews are nothing more than unstructured posts.

If we get this done right, we'll have everything in one spot done right.
Planning it out is the key.

Eric,

How would you deal with staffer ball reviews?

This makes great sense.

Good Question Scott,

I would probably find a way to verify their status as a current staffer.
Then put their reviews at the top of each ball they review.
Non-Staffer reviews could fall under.

Actually Eric...I look at it the other way around.  A few staffers that post on this site give great reviews ie. riggs, Steve Richter, RSalas...a few others.  A number of others need to fulfill their contracts and never give what I think of as reasonable opinions.  Laud their manufacturer without real info. Prefer to see real world good reviews on top of staffers. Staffers just have too many axes to grind. JMO.

I''''''''d be willing to contribute $5 or $10 to the cause when you get Bill''''''''s permission and go forward with this plan, my only question is how are you going to stop the Virus infections that killed my beloved BBR.com?

Don,

The information on BBR.com in terms of ball specs and stock pictures are not copyrighted, but of public domain and common knowledge handed down from the ball companies.

I would not be bringing reviews over, BBR.com owns those reviews.
All reviews on the new website would be newly submitted.

However, if Bill or anyone from BuddiesProShop.com/BBR.com objects to this project idea, please reach out to me.

In terms of learning from history, I would use a fully supported piece of software different and more secure than BBR.com''s, and take backups weekly.

If we secure the funds, I will start a beta release on BowlingChat.net.
Something to the effect of http://reviews.bowlingchat.net .

The site will be built on that subdomain until fit for production release on its own seperate domain, name yet to be determined.

Scott,

There can be a feature to review each user, where you can indicate if the reviewer was helpful, or have a "was this review helpful? yes/no" feedback reference.

I say take it and run with it.

I never used the site for anything other than pics and specs - but that's mainly because the reviews weren't really structured.

I'm good for a donation - I'll check in on the chat room sometime later this week.

Matt, StormBowler, thank you for your interest and support.

Everyone else, who is reading this thread please express your interest, yay or nay.
I will be putting together an anonymous survey to gauge interest of non-posters and determine which features are most important to you.

Thanks for your support everyone.

BowlingChat,

Upon further reflection, I think there could be more merit than originally thought. Of course depending on the standardized form and if pics of acutally balls, and videos could be attached to the actual review. Arms with this information, a review might be worth something.

Some items that I would like to see considered on the standardized form is the actual bowlers specs (or a link to a location where the spec's could be stored... ie. like a profile which would also be a standard form). This should include, Ball Speed off hand and through pins, rev rate, tilt and PAP. How long bowling, current average and potential history (major accomplishments such as #300's, #800's, City/State Titles, Pro titles, Other Tournament Wins... etc) This section would go to rate the bowler. It would even be nice of there could be a video attached of the bowler in his profile.

For the ball review it self all the standard information such as but not limiting to:
1. Weight
2. Top Weight
3. Pin Length
4. Pin to Pap Length
5. Pin to MB Length
6a. Mo's Dual Angle Layout Specs ( ie. 70 x 5.5 x 30 )
or
6b. Degree Layout
7. Picture of Ball
8. Video of reaction
9. Expectation (What specifically was the bowler attempting to obtain)
10. Results (What specifically did the bowler recieve)
11. Commentary - Personally refelction of the ball
12. Who drilled it
13. How long have you had the ball
14. Rating.

I will also donate to the cause but I want real substance from the reviews.

Chaser,

Users will be able to insert pictures and video in line within the reviews, ala facebook style with the html links to show the ball they are using.

I can set up any field in the review template and any field for the admin to insert as a field for ball data.

This reviews website will be done right, I can guarantee that.
I will be setting up a survey soon for all to take, and give feedback on this project.

Stay tuned.

BowlingChat,

I think what you are wanting to do is not only perfect for people wanting to see info about older balls and such, but that it gives us a site like what BBR had before just this time it will be upgrade and more user friendly.

I will be watching for the survey.

I appreciate your openness to help with this project.

We shall hold off on monetary contributions until I can gauge the interest of the community and announce the intent to begin this project.

Thank you, I am building the interest survey now.
