New bracket idea
« on: July 30, 2004, 05:14:18 PM »
It seems like I get a lot of weird ideas when I work midnites.

Here’s my latest brainstorm.

Since most of our local tournaments are 8-10 games, I thought about running brackets for a series instead of each game.

Here’s how it works.

10 Game tournament:

Game 1-2-3:  Total series score goes in where we used to put game 1
Game 4-5-6:  Total series score goes in where we used to put game 2
Game 7-8-9:  Total series score goes in where we used to put game 3

Bracket runs exactly the same as before.

My thinking is this would help eliminate the luck of the draw.  You could still shoot a low game somewhere in the bracket and still have a chance to pull it out with a couple of good games.

I thought we could run $25 brackets instead of the $5 ones.

What do you guys think?  Pros/cons

I think that you've got a good idea there, Darold. The cost may push away some of your tweeners who only get in one or two brackets, but the guys who drop big bucks in them would love it. I also think the idea that you can throw a bad game and not necessarily be toast will attract people also. You should work midnights more often! I think this would go over well. On a side note, Lance has been asking me when we should start prep for the next Old School Open. I'm not sure what we're going to do just yet, but I'll be sure to let you know as soon as things are in the works!

Bowling is without a doubt the dumbest, most pointless, most idiotic excuse for a game that has ever been invented. So, what time are we bowling tomorrow?

Still trying to work the bugs out.  For an 8 gamer, last game scores would be games 7-8, just 2 game total instead of three.

We could probably keep the price at $5, guys still get into 20-30 brackets instead of 3-4.  Just thought this might take the sting out of losing a bracket 278-279.

For a 10 gamer I was thinking of 16 man brackets.  1st 9 games for series, last game score to determine the winner.

I'll talk to the guys next time we have a long format tournament.  See what they think.  Just thinking of a way to take some of the luck of the draw out of brackets.

My son would love that!
He hates joining 5 brackets, getting same person more than once and losing more than one at one shot!!
That is the stinkiest thing about the way brackets run now.
I'm sure this would be a winning idea.

Best way to get things rolling, is snail mail your well written idea.

I once wrote a business idea to 10 places, one offered me a job and was interested in my idea.

Get it clarified, I'd gladly snail mail it around to some of the houses.

If it was soon enough, I bet the lady in Towson might like it.

Hmm, I'm going to call her. Last year she told me she was looking for ideas to bring in more bowlers. She has a very open mind.

Phone was dialed before I realized, Towson is only 4 games!!!

Good idea, now for something else for the ones with only 4.

One marathon my son bowled had a side pot for marathon bowlers only.
Don't think Towson did that, I'm going to try and get the lady in charge tomorrow to mention that idea.

Any other ideas out there??

The also ran a pot where so many low guys got bumped per game, in between games got you another chance.

Basing brackets on a 3 game series would have the better bowlers winning more of the brackets.  You would have a select group of high average bowlers winning most of the brackets.  Part of the draw of brackets is that anyone could win a one game match.  Therefore, you would lose a lot of the lower and mid average entries in brackets.
