New city....How to find a good driller?
« on: October 11, 2004, 07:31:24 AM »
Hopefully, I will be moving in the next 6 to 8 months.  I don't no where yet, but that doesn't really matter.

For those who have moved to another area with multiple drillers, how did you chose your current one?  I ask this b/c some of you have no idea about drillings, nor do you ever want too.  Some of us find it important to be involved in the drilling/layout process.

Did you go by word of mouth? or go in and quiz the guy to see what he knew?

I went on a vacation(sort of) in August.  I stop into a proshop in OKC and started talking with a operator.  He didn't even know if some balls where reactive or particle.  He stated my Pure Fuel was reactive resin, read below:

http://www.rotogrip.com/balls_pure_fuel.aspx

So, why should I consider buying anything from this guy if he doesn't even know what he is selling?  He told me he was the owner/operator, maybe he was lying.

Once again, how did you chose?

Bob7, I am not sure yet.  Hopefully still here in the plains states but further south.

The question was more about everyones experiences not just mine.

I usually just ask the alley who their regional pros are.  They know the best drillers.

I've been in NC for 5 years. GOOD DRILLERS are here .. YES .. problem here is COSTS for performing the job! If you have a good driller where you are .. make sure you take the SPEC'S with you on the move. It may very well be that you will get to an area and find a GOOD DRILLER that is reasonable .. but if you DON'T having the SPECS will allow you to shop ON-LINE! IF YOU are one of those bowlers that CHANGES THE GRIP ON EVERY ORDER .. just be prepared to have a DIFFICULT TIME FINDING THE RIGHT DRILLER!

Lots of luck on the move!

Hey Andrew,

It's moving time huh?  When I moved to Cal, I asked the higher avg bowlers AND like you said, I tested him.  If he can't keep up with your conversation and knowledge or wants to take the time, then keep trying bud.  Good luck..

Thanks for all the responses.  I expect to get orders very soon.

Rick, if I end up in California, you will be drilling my equipment.  If I end up in OK, then I will probably go where my grandfather goes in Tulsa or find someone good in OKC.

Here in Minot, ND, we have two people; one who knows how to drill bowling balls and one that can put three holes in bowling balls.  The choice was easy.  I am alittle worried about moving, I don't want to start over with finding good guys to bowl with and everything else that comes with a major move.

HA! There aren't any regional pros in this area or ND as far as I know.  However, I like your idea and will keep that in mind if/when I move.

I would go to the PBA message board for the appropriate region to which I was moving. Then post a thread asking for suggestions on good pro shops in your new area from PBA members.

All the drillers I've ever had have been through personal recommendations. My college coach recommended my driller throughout the 90's. When he went out of business I had the owner of the Monday league house I bowl in drill balls (he ran the pro shop, was a high 220 average at the time). Now I go with another guy who I've known as a bowler for 15 plus years, he takes his time with every ball to make sure I'm happy, and it's worth it to me to travel 30 minutes south to get a perfect fit every time.

Forget that, I'm gonna teach you how to work my press and you can drill your own stuff...so I can get back to my playstation.
