New Equipment advice needed
« on: August 17, 2008, 05:22:58 AM »
Due to severely restricted funds for a few years I have had to use other peoples "Cast offs",which at the moment consists of 2 pearls,a Track Xception and a Smokin Inferno.

Well when the lanes are med-dry they are both fine, with the occasional carry problem with the smokin. The problem is however that whenever there is a longer/tighter pattern or carrydown I struggle with these pieces,so I am looking at getting one new piece for heavy oil and one/two used pieces for med-oily.

I have identified a Cell for the Oiler but I have a choice of used balls for the med-oily and they are these:-

T-Road Solid
Thunderstruck Solid
Gamebreaker
Black Widow

Now I don't know my exact stats but I would say I'm a stroker that either plays a small-medium out and in shot usually somewhere around 1st/2nd arrow (Can play further left depending on ball/conditions) or straight up the boards (ala WRW & Norm Duke). I am medium speed/Revs and I would say my track is high-ish.

Now what I would like to know is a) What set up would you advise for the Cell in order to deal with oily conditions or carrydown and b) Which of the used pieces would you recommend for med-oily conditions and what drilling/surface would you recommend.

Also if you could factor in possible problems with the used pieces (Mainly thinking about BW ball death) it would help.

Any help would be greatly appreciated as I probably buy a ball once every 3 years (Not good for someone with a 215 ave but cest la vie) and I can ill afford to make any mistakes with these purchases.

Thanks in advance guys

a T-Road Solid is very versatile, I'd say put your favorite layout on it and adjust surface to how you want it to react. a T-Road Solid at 4000 Abralon, is a great compliment to the Cell when its just a little too much or go with a Roto Grand Illusion, which is also a great compliment to the Cell

You can't go wrong with either the T Road solid or the Gamebreaker...both are VERY versatile and tkae surface adjustments well.

My only suggestion would be to test the degree of "oil soak" by holding each of them in front of a hair dryer for 10-15 seconds and see how much oil pours surfaces.

My 2 cents is that is sound advice from both SVStar and Doug.

My inclination is T-Road solid at 4000 grit Abralon OR 800 grit + medium polish.

Cell: I'd suggest a 4" pin to PAP with the pin at the height above the midlane with which you've had the best success. MB about 2" on the PAP side of the thumb hole. Leave surface as stock.

The Thunderstruck Solid is an awesome piece. Its got a very tweakable and durable coverstock on it and the ball is rolly by nature even with a pin up layout. At 4K abralon mine was just as strong as my Black Widow Solid just earlier on the lane. I tend to keep it shiny as its a great medium-medium+ oil ball.

And on ebay if you search for them bowlingball.com has them on there and you can land them for about 55 shipped!
