Burning Energy

What is the easiest way to figure out if a solid cover is burning up on the lanes. Having trouble deciding when there is and isnt enough oil. Looking for advice and your methods...

I try to throw a polished ball.  Uusally with a pin above.  If it glides without a pretty good break point, I lean toward oil.  If the ball breaks early or sharp at the break point, I lean toward buring up.

Weak hit at the pins. Straightening out before backend. No carry.

throw a weaker ball and see if it hooks more on the backend.
If so then there isn't enough oil for the solid up front so therefore less backend.
