Title: New fall aresonal set up.
Post by: TheBowlingKid25 on July 18, 2004, 10:37:23 PM
Ok, basically the deal is I want a 4 ball aresonal, including a spare ball. I have a plastic ball to have plugged and redrilled, so I need suggestions for the rest of it. In the bag right now is a Triple X Factor, box finish, a Monster Bruiser, polished, and a Monster Slay/R, sanded to 800 with a green scotch brite pad. I want to replace the Bruiser and Slay/R, so I need a Medium oil ball, and a light oil ball. I dont want to have any brunswick, EXCEPT I was thinking about the grooves, not sure though. So anyways, besides power grooves, what would be good medium and light oil balls? I prefer skid/snap.

i personally have never seen a xxx factor, but it is a pearl reactive, so how much oil can it really handle? if it can handle oil, use it for heavy, but i think it would be better off as a medium oil ball looking at the specs. in that case i would go with something more along the lines of this:

Sheer havoc/ granite gargoyle-heavy oil i would go with the granite gargoyle, very versatile ball and will last forever any other particle, particle pearl, or solid reactive should work here also (maybe an ultimate inferno?)
xxx factor for medium
sonic x pearl/sonic x solid(skid snap {the pearl}versus early hook, control{the solid)/ pioneer/green gargoyle, personally i would go with the green gargoyle.

Batman, are you an idiot?  A sanded Maxim is WAY too much ball, I mean DUH.  I suggest a Quasar polished to 400.

The Triple X can handle a bit of oil, but still leaves me open a space. I guess I will probably end up polishing it, for medium oil. As for light oil and heavy oil, Im still open to suggestions. I have been looking to try Visionary for a while now. The only problem I have trying to find a heavy oil ball, is that I dont want something that will arc the whole lane. I want length, and a strong backend move.

BK, I know you don't want brunswick, but the Ultimate Inferno is what I can think of off the top of my head for a heavy oil ball that isn't particle....when I think of others I'll let you know, on here or at league tonight.....

Well I think what Im going to do is go for either the U.I. or Charcoal Excutioner for heavy, polish my triple x for medium, and I still dont know what I want for light. Was thinking maybe a power groove? Not sure yet, keep the suggestions coming!

The ice is supposed to be medium oil, I dont know if that would be too strong. I'm not a fluffer, but I dont have super revs, medium/high-ish

I've had great luck with Storm equipment on the medium oil lines, so I would suggest an Eraser Pearl Particle especially if you enjoy a skid/snap reaction. I've also heard the Hot Wire is a good medium oil ball, and I know they are discontinued so you may be able to pick one up at a reasonable price.

I have a friend who does very well with a Detour in medium oil as well.

Just figured I would throw these out there, always good to comparison shop and see what fits your game.

Thanks MSC, Im going to have my triple X for medium. So I guess we'll see how that goes. IF ANYONE HAS A 15# POWER GROOVE THEY WANT TO TRADE PM ME! Im looking for light oil balls, because I dont want to replug my slay/r again, as it already has the thumb done once. Same for the Bruiser. I wanna trade these off for heavy and light oil balls.

the charcoal ex is a little weak, i wouldn't call it a heavy oil ball. another option if you want backend would be a phenom unleashed or freak. those balls have very nice length for heavy oil balls, and since the freak is discontinued, you might be able to get a good deal on it.

my vote for a nice 4 ball arsenal woiuld consist of:

plastic or pearl urethane for spares
pearl resin for most conditions with good backends
dull resin or pearl particle for medium heavy
pearl particle maxxed out or dull particle for heavy

Suggestions could be:
pearl resin....Inferno, Uranium, Sling Blade, Throttle/R, XXX Factor
dull resin....Monster SmashR, full throttle, Deuce, XXX Xtreme, Ultimate Inferno, V-2
pearl particle...Thrash, Eraser Pearl Particle, Big Blue Pearl, GOlden Nugget
dull particle...Animal, Big Blue, Throttle, Super Carbide, Fear Factor

Not a complete list but I just rattled off some popular balls.

I think Doug has the best idea here actually. I think what I'll do is get a new spare ball (its as cheap to buy one as it is to have it plugged and redrilled), then polish my triple x. As for the other two, I'd say the Charcoal Executioner for particle, and then something for the particle pearl. Looking to get things as cheap as possible.

Heavy - Triple Xtreme or Phenom Unleashed
Med/Hvy to Med - XXX Factor
Med to Med/Lt - Sonic Boom
Spare

Adjust covers as necessary.

granite gargoyle would be a very good choice, the cover is very versatile and durable, although it does show dirt much more since it is grey. that can be veiwed as a good thing also though. the ball can cover a wide variety of lane conditions, and can be a very formidable heavy oiler

Im doing a trade, or hopefully doin a trade with Doug, a single drill 14# x-factor and some cash, for one of thses. What would be the best choice for my needs in your opinion?

Well, since you need one for medium-heavy oil, I'd say the BBP or golden nugget.  Maybe the vicious attack, but I don't know how strong it is.

the bbp isnt bad, but the pin is a little long on it. the vicious attack was not a very popular ball in my area, so i cant comment on that. and the golden nugget was hit or miss, i dont really think it would work well on heavy patterns.

nothing new, but check out the used section. at least then i might not even have to give him any cash. The green gargoyle looks like the span is pretty small, and I may not have to redrill it.

You guys are making this too hard.  Unless you're a serious tournament bowler, get a somewhat aggressive resin or light load particle for medium to med/heavy, a moderate hooking pearl resin for medium to med/light and a spare ball.  Keep it cheap until you really get you form/style "nailed" down.  If you can get some used stuff cheap and get it drilled for your hand reasonable, go ahead and experiment, just don't go overboard.  It will just lead to confusion that will delay your improvement.
