don carter gold ebonite
« on: June 07, 2004, 02:57:19 AM »
Has anyone heard of this ball before?  I came across a brand new one... sort of brownish in color...  feels heavy... 14, 15 or 16lbs... not sure.  Is it plastic or rubber or urethane?  Any info would be appreciated.
Thanks,

I found a Don Carter Commemorative ball, but its black. Its a rubber ball, classified for extremely light oil.

Hard to remember back that far, I know there was a "wine" colored plastic Don Carter, probably 74-78 time frame.  Can't really remember Ebonite ever putting Don Carters name on a Urethane ball, the few rubber ones I saw were all black.

Alright... thanks for the input.  Let me get a couple photos of the ball... maybe that will help with the identification

Hey Strapper,

I believe the one you have is plastic.  It rings a bell but I can't be sure.  There was a chain of retail stores in Chicago that used to have lower quality balls made especially for them, but also had name brands stamped on them like Bruns Axis is to Kmart.  The store name was Goldblatts, not sure if they're even in business anymore.  They ran quite a few "Don Carter" signature balls back in the 70-80's.

The original Don Carter balls that I'm familiar with are all hard black rubber, those were out during the AMF 3 dotters, Manhattans, Aces, Ripleys...etc.  Hope this helps bud..

On edit: Ebonite's high end balls in the 70's were called the Magnum line.
Mag 6 thru Mag 12, Mag 9 was Earl Anthony's caramel ball comparative to the yellow dot and the Mag 10 was their answer to the LT-48, Mag 11+12 were their first urethane mixture balls if I remember correctly.
