New hand position...720
« on: October 28, 2009, 07:05:27 AM »
So I decide to quit being stubborn about changing my game to suit the lane conditions. Took my normal hand position on the ball (fingers underneath ball, thumb at 1 o'clock, fingers at 7)and moved it (thumb at 11, fingers at 4). Also, I quit hitting it at the release point as well, but made sure that I gave it a proper lift.

So, now instead of having to keep my ball wide and play deep, I can play more to the inside and keep a consistant roll, hook on the ball. I let the ball do the work.

Well, the carry improved and my ball didn't roll out as much as it use to.

The reason for the change is due to the every decreasing amount of lane oil I'm seeing at the houses I bowl in.

Yeah, there's a time and a place for a release like that.  Most of the time it's on a house pattern

That's all I see..

But, I was on a pbax league and couldn't keep the ball on the lanes due to the lighter oil volumes. Really hurt my average there

I too had always kept my fingers under the ball, but with the thumb all the way at the 3 o'clock position and the ball resting on the pad of the index finger.  It was described years ago as the "quick inside release".  I believe that this type of release will get the ball into an earlier roll.

I now also use a release where the thumb is at 10-11 o'clock.  Cupped and cocked is how it was explained to me.  This gets the ball farther down the lane before it gets into a roll and therefore delaying the hook.  I see a little more snap at the backend with this release.

For oilier lanes I use the first position.  But the house shots I bowl on are usually medium oil.
