Usually when you sand a surface finer, the ball will go longer and break harder than it did with the previous finish, IF you're bowling on the exact same condition and you change nothing else.
I find it hard to believe a ball breaks too hard at a 1000 grit dull surface. I suppose a ball that has a very mild coverstock, when used on far too much oil might do this. In that case, the solution is to use a more appropriate ball.
