Looking for shot percentage opinions
« on: July 09, 2007, 01:12:39 AM »
Hello!

I design for an on-line text-based roleplaying game, and we have a bowling center that opened in-game last fall.  I did not have much input in the original code, but after months of fussing about how unrealistic the scoring is, I've now tackled a revamp of the system with the help of another designer.  Our discussion right now is what are realistic percentages for strikes, spares, and opens, based on skill level.  I'd appreciate hearing from anyone who cares to hazard an educated guess.  Here are the skill levels we're considering:

ELITE BOWLER (220+ average)
Strike %
Spare %
Open %

PROFESSIONAL BOWLER (200-220 average)
Strike %
Spare %
Open %

ABOVER AVERAGE AMATEUR (175-200 average)
Strike %
Spare %
Open %
First ball channel %

AVERAGE AMATEUR (150-175 average)
Strike %
Spare %
Open %
First ball channel %

BELOW AVERAGE AMATEUR (130-150 average)
Strike %
Spare %
Open %
First ball channel %

BEGINNER (no set average)
Strike %
Spare %
Open %
First ball channel %

All thoughtful input would be appreciated!

They give the strike percentage on the TV show.  Usually they average in the 220s or 230s and have strike percentages in the 60-65% range with 80%+ spare percentage.

You can be in the 230s with only three spares per game, that's a 75% strike percentage.

An online text bowling game ?

You're joking.

It's one of many activities the players can participate in.  The focus is on roleplay, but there are all sorts of things they can do as part of that.  Bowling is one of them.  There are also systems for lasertag and roller skating, just to name two.

Aloarjr810,

Thanks for the suggestion!  They're both proving quite helpful!
