New League Concept
« on: May 21, 2009, 11:55:32 PM »
For years I have been complaining winter leagues are too long. So I came up with this concept.

Have a year around league with at least 7 week increments (21 games to establish legal averages) and have more team members. This way bowlers could decide which of the increments they wanted to bowl and how many. There would be a pay off at the end of each increment. Some money would be reserved from each increment to provide yearly awards.

This has many benifits to both bowling centers and league members.
1. Bowling centers would still be guarenteed league bowlers
2. Leagues would extend into summer where as now they are separate.
3. League money would be less (less to steal).
4. Members would get some money back during the league season instead of waiting until the end.
5. Of course the option to sit out for segments for league sessions.

The concept might still be rough but what do you think?

As a general concept I really like the idea.

In my area I don't think the bowling over the summer part would work but it might in other places. Maybe break the regular season into four or five 7 week increments with a 1-2 week break in between? IMO a short break in between sessions could keep people from burning out over the course of a season.

I just lost two people I've bowled with for 20 years in one of my leagues. One said he'd sub when possible but he can only do that maybe 2-3 months of the season. The other one is done for good after 20 years. Both of their kids are getting older and they don't want to miss out on sports and other activities with them. I'm sad to see them go but I completely understand why the gave up the game. Being able to bowl part of a league season like you suggest might've been enough to keep one or both of them part time and still involved in bowling.

I didn't bowl this last summer but my ex-team wanted to do a rotation.  7 people on the roster and we rotate, sitting out once a month. We have a cap so I could only change places with 2 other bowlers. The other bowler was a lower average bowler and could sub for all 5.  A couple other teams were doing this and they said they liked it.  It gave them a break once a month and also saved them some money.

In the West the shorts are on in February round my parts.  I think the leagues should be a little longer than that.

But there should be some options for shorter league seasons outside of the traditional mixed 5 36 week behemoths.

Maybe some shorter leagues with slightly higher weekly fees to bumb up a bigger prize fund for a more competitive league?

As to the original post, I think 7 weeks is pretty rough given that the first 1 or 2 weeks is just trying to get everyone sactioned and settled in.  14 week incriments sounds good, thats 3 sessions with some time off.

Would that concept cause problems with reporting AVERAGES to USBC?

The idea is good, but something around 14 weeks as Backswing suggested might be better.  Sand baggers would love 7 week "seasons".  All they would have to do is miss one week and their average wouldn't be recognized by the USBC.  Of course, even with your idea, if the USBC were smart (big stretch), they could make a rolling average that either used all games over a season, or at least tracked the most recent 100 or so even if were over several seasons.  It would be more work, but more accurate.

I'd like to see a league that would run from the fall time change to the spring time change.  Fall leagues start too early and end too late.  I hate going bowling when it's still light outside......too many outdoor activities (and work) to do.
