New One For Me
« on: March 26, 2011, 10:17:54 PM »
The other day in the shop we were drilling a Storm Triple X that had been plugged once before.  While drilling the drill bit bounced like you wouldn't believe.  Of course we stopped and pulled the ball out, only to see either a nut or bolt at the bottom of the hole.  We dropped a magnet in there to see if it was actually steel, and sure enough, it stuck to the nut or bolt.  Had to put the 1 3/8 bit to sleep as it is not usable anymore.  In 17 years, I have never seen anything like that before.  Tried to take a picture, but it wouldn't come out good enough.

What are the strangest things that drillers have found inside a ball while drilling???

Who needs a 300 or 800, when I have a 294 and a 295!?!?!

As a joke my driller put stack of 7 washers in a weight hole and plugged it. Man did that thing flip over from then on. It had the funniest off balance wobble going down the lane.

Long time ago, back in the days of urethane dominance, we  found a 3/4inch nut in a guys Cobra at the bottom of an old hole.

He swore he didn't have anything to do with it, but had previously worked in the shop, and had plugged the ball himself. He always swore somebody else must've done it after he left and before the plug had set up.

 NOBODY believed his story.

A friend of mine and I once put a couple of tire balancing weights in a ball, just to see what it would do. I think we accidentaly created a ball with a PSA because this thing would flare about 5-6 inches, outhook our urethane stuff (it was an old rubber AMF Classic), and hit like nothing we had ever seen. If we had only understood what we had done....................

There was a local guy a few years ago that would put metal weights in the thumb hole or fingers of the ball. He plugged a few and sold them only later for someone else to drill it and find out what he did. Sad.
