New PBA Tour
« on: December 07, 2010, 06:21:11 AM »
With the apparent success of the WSOB does anyone think there is a better option for reviving the PBA and WPBA?

256 bowlers 1 week 5 titles on the line. Imagine 3 Months and 60 Titles, all in one place. This would reduce the cost to televise, reduce cost for transportation for pro's, increase visitors to vegas to watch.

The options are endless. Instead of 5 tournaments per week, make it 3 day tournaments Mon - Wednesday and Firday through Sunday all year long. Stop the limit to 64 players and open it back up to unlimited (upto 256). This way, whenever you can get time off from work for a week or two there is a PBA event to bowl. You know where, you know when... Show up... pay your money and take your chance.

What does anyone think?

It's not a bad idea... Bring costs down for the bowlers and the producers. The only thing about it is that it wouldn't be a "tour" then...

I like the idea i would get the nation to vote then go to the 12 cities with the most votes. Also i think the need more variety of shots.

I think just about everyone agrees that the WSOB itself is a good idea, just that it could use some tweaking, and it shouldn't be half the season.

The PBA would have to buy a center and own/run it for this to happen.  Its very hard to tie up a center for 3 months.

The draw back is your going to have a lot of weeks where entries to your events are not going to be 256.  You still have the problem of sponsorship and revenue coming from promotional activities.   Where do you get the prize fund money from if your not getting 256 entries a week, if you do not secure major sponsorship money?

Your not going to get 256 people to show up 60 times.   If you can not secure major sponsorship, your facing the same problem as before, bowlers bowling for each others money and not sponsorship money.   You would have to charge the standard $500 entry fee like they do now, to get any prize fund.  Now try to get 256 people a week at $500 for 60 events.

60 tournaments would equal even more reduced prize funds than they are now.   What would you pay for 1st place? $20,000?   Your going to need a boat load more cash than what the PBA can generate as it is now if you want to increase prize funds over a 60 tournament series.

3 months in the same place, would be way too long.

You'd have to rename it, as it would hardly be considered a "tour" at that point.

That said, I think its a good idea.  Perhaps even several regional PBA "hotspots" where these constant tournaments and one national, annual Tournament of Champions?

No matter what is done,  the single most important thing is to find a time slot on TV that is not next to the biggest most watched sport in America...

That being Pro Football... Really!!!! It was in all the papers on of course on TV...

I would say Saturday Night in prime time might be decent... There really aren't many good shows on TV on Sat. night...

But Sunday at noon next to the NFL...

WTF were they thinking...

Next time your in a sports bar on Sunday at noon,  trying asking for them to turn on Bowling...

Sat night is the worst night to find good tv programs, as there seems to be little interest in programming on most stations.

This would give people something to watch, and a sporting event that is not going agains''t other main stream sporting events.

I say it almost every Saturday night,  "there is nothing on tv to watch".

It is alot better to continue to go around the country to places that have been supporting the PBA for years,
watching the first couple of telecasts have been very disheartening, the lack of audience numbers is a sign of what we have to look for if the PBA were to stay in one venue all the time

I suspect it is on Sundays against Pro Football because that is a time ESPN needs to fill. Look at what follows Bowling, usually Billards. ESPN knows it has nothing to compete with the NFL.

Its the highest rating program to go against football in that time slot.

ESPN will never change it because it gives them the best ratings, and revenue of any other program in that slot.

Now bowling could get better ratings and revenue at a different slot, but it fits into what ESPN needs and thus they keep it at that time slot.

I think somewhere down the line, ESPN has 10% ownership in the PBA or something like that.

ESPN has the control of this ball.   The PBA pays ESPN for air time, but at the air time ESPN wants to give them.

So basically what you are saying here is that Pro Bowling on ESPN, much like our country under Obama, is screwed...

Who would want to bowl in a tournament where there are 252 entries and only 16 cashing spots per event ?  Not to mention that 1st place pays $15,000 and 2nd paying $8000 with 16th paying $1800.  Definetly hard to make a living and this is called Professional Bowling !

Sorry, let the current form of the "Tour" go away and hopefully someone with new creative ideas and "Deep" pockets will pick it up.
