What Video Camera to Buy?
« on: January 17, 2008, 10:42:19 AM »
If I wish to take videos of me and some of my friends bowling, what video camera will do the job? I would like to be able to plug the camera into a laptop computer to view the images and perhaps use some analysis software.

Don't wish to spend much money, bowling is all I would use it for.

Suggestions?

At the coaching summit in Vegas last June, they recommended Mini DVs that use tapes.  There is a problem with the resolution after transfer to the analysis software if using hard drive video cams.

I personally bought the Cannon ZR850.  The downside is the built in light is not very effective and it does not have the accessory shoe (I think that is what it is called) that allows you to plug in a light as an accessory.

I've got the Canon DC22 that uses mini DVD/DVD-RW. This is sweet cuz ya pop out the DVD and stick it into your DVD player or computer.

I use a small/simple digital camera which uses an SD chip for data storage and which can also be used as a webcam or to be plugged into a computer/laptop. Kinda like this one:

http://www.amazon.de/Aiptek-Pocket-DV-T-100/dp/B000NBCAU4/ref=sr_1_12?ie=UTF8&s=ce-de&qid=1200664472&sr=1-12

Low end piece, only digital zoom and 640x480 pixel resolution, since I do not much filming, but it is enough for everyday working.

A good mount is also a must, or at least highly recommended.

Besides, for coaching purposes I am with Thongprincess: better choose a camera
with a digital tape. I think you can connect one with a laptop, too, for live pictures. The AVI format from the tapes is very hi-res and bulky, but if you want a zoom on the release or details from the ball down the lane, this is the better option. The simple/small non-tape cameras will only help with overall shots - but if you are on a budget, IMHO this is enough.

I bought this one for my husband for Christmas ... http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16830120090 ... just for the purpose of taping his sessions with his coach.  So far he's extremely pleased.  The only thing I had to buy separately, besides the tapes, was the firewire cable to connect it to our laptop.

I bought this camera (not a true video camera) for $250 plus a $40 4gb card.  It has a 10x optical zoom and with that memory card will take over 100 mins of video at 30 frames per second.  It comes with a fireware cable to hook into your computer and the pics look great too!  It also fits nicely into your pocket.
