New Release, Do I need new equipment?
« on: November 03, 2009, 03:28:39 AM »
I have been working with a coach for about a couple months now and made some changes to my game that I really didn't plan on making to be honest, but I'm glad I did.  I have always been a descent player with a consistent 215 average year in and year out but I have struggled with a consistent release.  After about a month the ball is coming out of my hand much smoother and alot more consistent than in the past, but do I need new equipment to support the changes?  My PAP went from 5-1/8" over 3/4" up and now it is 4-5/8" over 1/2" up.  My rev rate dropped from 348 to 319 but my speed remained constant at around 16.5 at the pins.  I'm a righty.  I have 3 Roto Grip balls drilled based on my old PAP:

1. Rogue Cell (45x4x30) 4"x4" w/ 1-1/2" buffer. Pin is 1-1/8" up and 1-2" right of ring finger, MB is 1-1/4 right of thumb (it now is more like 3-1/2" x 3" w/ 1" buffer).  I find with this ball I don't have near the reaction I used to, this ball will skid forever on a fresh house shot @ 40feet and synthetic lanes.  There is no reaction from this ball until middle of the second game once there is a track.

2. Cell Pearl (60x5x40) 5"x4" w/ 2-1/2" pin buffer.  Pin is above bridge, MB 1" right of thumb (it now is more like 4-1/4" x 3-5/8" w/ 2" pin buffer).  I still get a pretty good reaction from this ball off the dry.  It still does what I want it to which is get through the heads on a broken down lane and finish strong in the back.

3. Mars (70x5x40) pin 3-3/8" CG 3-3/8".  Pin is next to ring finger CG is 1/2" right of centerline (it now is more like 3" x 3").

Overall the Rogue is the only ball that has given me disappointment.  I got it to battle the 1st and 2nd games of league before I switch to my Cell Pearl but the Rogue has become almost a light oil ball.  I clean it religiously after each set and extract the oil every 2 weeks, the surface I have taken down to 2000 abralon with not much difference at all.  Do I need to do something different for a heavy-medium oil ball?  Thanks for any help.

IMHO, you really don''t need to change anything unless you are now tracking over the holes. The ball MAY react differently, but I don''t think it would be enough to warrant a re-drill.

Once you get used to the "new" reaction, it really should be a problem..

It sound like the Rogue is burning up since you can switch to the CP and be effective. The lanes may not have the oil volume you think they have

Hey Oddball,

Getting a new ball or plug and redrill will be last resort.  If I stand 25 and throw over 12 at the arrows I can usually get a small break around 5 but it makes it back far enough to take out the right side of the 3 pin. That has always been the line I play to start the night for the last 10 years and it drives me nuts I can't do it.  I cannot find a line that gives me that comfortable look that has a smooth arc into the pocket.  Lastnight when I started the 3rd game I kept my Rogue and played the line I described above.  Stood 25 threw over 12 at the arrows and had a perfect arc the entire game and I never moved.  Everyone and their brother was playing that line all night long so I figured it would be too burnt out but it was not, it was perfect.  I ended up with a 268 for the last game.  Confused but not giving up.

New release and PAP changes could cause your current equipment to react a little weaker then before but that isn't alway's a bad thing. Before a plug and redrill stronger I would do a surface change 1st. If that doesn't work then do a plug/redrill.

Have your PAP rechecked.  If the differences(if any) are minimal, then you should be okay.  I had a bad wrist injury, changing my PAP from 4 1/4>, 1/4v to 5 3/4> and 1/2^ mandating new layouts.

I'd only worry on balls that have a strong setup like your Mars. A shift in PAP is the main issue here - with the core in the most instable position, a shift to the "wrong" side can cause the ball to react different, because it migrates towards anothter PSA - around the pin! The result would be a mellow, arcing reaction, a kind of strong pin axis layout - rolly, and prone to lack hitting power.

I'd mark the new PAP on any of your balls and try them in training - watch (or videotape from the positive side) waht the PAP does and how the ball reacts. In the worst case, you might have to re-drill a ball or replace it.

A fridn of mine has his PAP shift from 5" over +/-0 to 4" over and +/-0. As a result, half of his equipment (including a brand new LevRG still drilled on the old measures) became crap with poor reactions...

Hey dizzy,

As far as watching my new PAP and what it does, is there anything specific I should be looking for?  I have accepted the fact that my Rogue does not do well in fresh oil, it didn't do well when I had my old release so that is not not new.  I am thinking about getting a heavy oil ball but I wanted to get everyones input on my PAP shift and what effects it would have.  If I can grab my Rogue in the 2nd game everynight and finish the night with it I have no problem with it, I just need something to get the night started.

But I'm not sure what I should be looking for when I put the piece of tape on my PAP and throw it.  Is there a certain reaction I should NOT see?  My coach left for a 2 week vacation today so I'm coachless for now but if I can do it myself with a little bit of help I'm up for the challenge.  Thanks for the help.

You should check whether the PAP marker migrates away from its initial axis or not, and into which direction. You might place a piece of tape on your PAP, and another piece of a different color onto the pin, and maybe another color onto the PSA or at 6.75" from the pin through the CG - unless the latter ends up in the track.

That way you can tell how the ball behaves - and if it migrates towards the PSA marker, everything is fine. If it moves towards the pin, it is a bad sign. It does not mean that the ball is "broken", it just has a very different reaction now, rather rolly and arcing. Then you must decide if you want to stick with it, or consider a different layout, since the shift of PAP has (relatively) turned the drilling into something VERY different.

Balls with a larger pin-to-PAP distance shoudl not be that critical, but their reaction can change, too.

Great info Dizzy, thanks a bunch!

While we are on the topic of migrating.  My Cell Pearl is the only ball in my arsenal that rolls over my thumb.  There are 2 tracks over my thumb, sometimes it pops the ball up off the lane sometimes it does not.  My Rogue and Mars track about 1/4"-3/8" off my thumb, Cell Pearl the track goes right through the middle of my thumb hole. My tracks are still a good 1" away from my middle finger so I know I am not coming straight up the back of it.  My coach is even a little baffled by it, he has suggested putting a balance hole on my PAP to see if that doesn't move the track enough to get it off my thumb but I'm not sure I wanna do that unless I know it will take care of it.  My Rogue has an X-hole 2" down my VAL and it didn't move my track at all when I put that hole in so I'm not sure what to do.  Any suggestions?
