New spare ball questions?
« on: October 14, 2012, 08:03:34 AM »
I have been using a Black knight for my spare ball ( 10 pins mostly). It is time to replace it, it is still a 16lb - I am using 15 and the span is slightly off as well. I am looking at the Storm black ice because it is a poly cover just like the black knight. I was also looking at the polar ice blue green, but that is a urethane. Which would be a better pick. I am leaning towards the black ice.

years ago, i found an old NIB hard rubber ball on ebay for about $20 with shipping.   It works great, goes straight.  the 1970's/1980's style core gives it just enough that if i push the ball out, it might straight out and run the gutter for the 10 pin, but has no actual grab.

My guess is that any surface with no grab and a minor, or no core, will be your best option.

This year, i have actually started using it for all single pin spares, and it definately has no hook crossing the oil.

Any plastic ball will work fine...don't overthink a spare ball.  If you drill something that has a little "grab", you will have to factor the oil in when you run into extreme dry and wet.  The idea of the spare ball is to take the lane out of play, plastic will do that better than anything.

I have drilled several Polar Ice, both colors and mostly for spare balls. I also use one myself.
The best reason I have to go with a Polar Ice is since it is urethane it will last longer without the fingers/thumb breaking out. They do go straight and the cost is in line with a basic plastic ball.
