...Leland Lanes and Bama Bowl for the first time in probably 20 years.

Why is this such good news? Real wood at Leland for starters, and that place can be an absolute boneyard. They've made it a lot easier lately but there's no house in our state that can do a hard shot like that place can, IF someone puts their mind to it. Every pair has character, you basically bowl in the dark, there's no room to move around and cigarette smoke hangs like fog in that place. In other words, intimidating as heck to pampered wall babies.

I think Bama has changed out to synthetics since I left town. Regardless, this is great because it breaks the monotony of Mobile/Montgomery/Birmingham/Huntsville that has been going on now for the better part of three decades.

Any other Alabama guys in here, and bowling state this year? If so, you might be in for a challenge.

Jess

around here if they go to a hard house the entries drop off.... then you have a bunch of hacks that are there to drink beer every hour they are there.

up here for States, they went to the Kegel Challenge patterns for the Mens States, i think Mixed States is still a house shot.....

I say that because last yr, it was held in my old home town and the house it was held at was stupid for high scores / averages and a husband / wife i know set the new state record with for Actual with a 1536....

And you know the house is easy, when a guy who usta bowl regionals, and all the other houses in town, he's never had a 800 series, but several high 700's and couple 299's and 300's and what not, has 4   800's before december....

And you know the house is easy when guys are averaging 220+  and goto states and struggle to shoot 180's

I'd like to see all state tournaments contested on sport-compliant shots. It's supposed to be a state championship...well, act like it. Make people work for their score. This isn't a Friday night forty-framer.

Here's a snapshot of how hard Leland Lanes used to be. These numbers are approximate, and were circa 1999-2000:

* All-men's average: 158
* All-bowler's average: around 150, maybe below.
* 33rd week -- that's when we had the first 600 series shot during a 36-week season in the Bud Light Major men's league.
* When I left there in 2001, there had been 3 300s shot shot since the house opened (which was approximately 1978).

I'd love to see that shot back again for state.

I would like all mens leagues to do a more challenging shot, including state ran tourneys.

Jess...

I'm thinking about going..it all depends on the financial situations..being from Huntsville and I have always enjoyed my times in Tuscaloosa..this could be a thumbs up...

I've never bowled at Leland..only Bama...and Bama had a sport shot that day and it was very tough...

Either way..it should be interesting if they keep that concept for this year's State Tournament...

Another thing..if you have ever bowled at Super Bowl in Birmingham...they keep that place pretty tough...did a StepLadder tournament over there..shot 617...and the cut ended up being 630...scores were low during that stop...

Take care, good luck, and God Bless!

Michael,

LOL at the Super Bowl. Did they still have the sign up in the bar saying "no guns or knives beyond this point"?

Second hardest state tournament I've ever bowled was the one where we were at the now-defunct Eastwood Bowl and the Super Bowl. We went down to SB the night before the tournament to practice and they had a beautiful shot out there, lots of backend, everyone striking all over the place. Went back the next day for the actual tournament and I think they were oiled with Castrol GTX.

Ever run into a guy named Ronnie Ramsey? He used to book about 190 at Leland back when no one could do it. He didn't get out of the 140s that day at Super Bowl.

Last time I was in Leland, they had a very nice shot on those old wood lanes, but it's on the gutter. That place has the deadest side boards in the history of bowling. If you're trying to play in, you could get to the pocket, but you've got to be PBA-level precise or it's going to be a tour of the back row all day long. I have one 600 series in that house in eight years of bowling there.

If they take Leland back to the way it was before, they'll oil 10 units from the gutters to the 10s and then 20 units between the 10s. That was their shot for years. Backends stripped once, maybe twice a week. They used to have an old Century oil machine that wouldn't stop at the same distance on each lane, either -- lane 1 would be 37 feet, lane 2 would be 25 feet, lane 3 would be 48 feet, etc.

Was Bama wood or synthetic the last time you were there? If it's still wood, and they've got their typical non-sport tournament shot out, you can suitcase/dump the ball outside and let it run, unless you're in the lower end and then you're pretty well screwed.

Jess

p.s.: I didn't mean to imply I didn't like going to Huntsville. I like Pla-Mor and Pin Palace a great deal. Always a fun trip there. I'm just glad we're back in T-Town for a change.

Jess,

I knew you weren''t implying anything bad buddy...I don''t go into plamor anymore for personal reasons...but I work in the pro shop at Pin Palace during the day and manager the shop location inside Parkway Lanes at night...which Parkway is my house...very easy walled up shot...lots of 220+s going on in there including myself...don''t look on it that bad..I''m just really fortunate to be able to average that high right now...

Last time I was at Bama...they had synthetics...

This should be an interesting state tournament if they put out what you say...

Also..I believe they do still have that sign at Super Bowl! LOL! That''s too funny...

Take care and God Bless!
