More on lane play
« on: November 07, 2006, 10:24:02 PM »
This alludes back to Sawbones post on lane play being the most important aspect to learn of the modern game.

Virtually all house’s leagues are held on the THS where a shot (a sweet spot) is built into the lane pattern giving you maximum room for error.

You can have the best ball/drill in the world for the line you are trying to play but if you are not playing the lanes properly you will not score close to the highest potential.

Someone who is playing the lanes properly, even if it is not with not the best ball, will score higher.

I have found that most bowlers who think a given condition is tough are simply not playing the proper part of the lane.

I’ll take on any bowler in the world on a THS if they have to play the lanes improperly and I can play the sweet spot.

You must first find the proper line on the lane and then adjust balls if needed to maximize carry.

Your correct that one needs to play the lanes properly.  However on THS one has a ton of area.  Now some THS shots are a little more difficult than others.  I practice at a house during the week and it's pretty easy. There's a lot of miss area.

I feel that if one can't shoot the correct part of the lane on THS then they should really consider getting a coach.  I practice at an alley that has about 10 boards of area to get a strike.  It's ridiculous to say the least!

I personally don't understand why any bowler wouldn't want to join a difficult lane condition league or sport league.  I bowl on a league that puts out some very difficult patterns.  One has to work for a low 200 game.  I probably wont shoot many honor scores but it's a lot more fun and makes you better.

I have been on my league for 4 seasons.  We have not had any 300 games since i've been there.  The highest avg. at the end of the season is 189 or 191 if I remember correctly.

I did  found something in my THS league on Monday I would never have tried or done in the past. I normally take a pearl ball like the Strike Machine or the Equation and play the track area which is 8-12 or so.

I and most of my other lane players were having trouble carrying the 10 pin. So in the last part of the second game I took my oil ball which is the Robo and played deeper at 15 and let the lanes bring the ball back to the hole. Shot 267 and was high on the pair for the night. It only took a little bit of trying a line I would never had tried in the past.

Just my experience with don't be afraid to be different.
