Question
« on: July 23, 2013, 09:14:29 PM »
Ok so a few weeks ago I decided to go with a longer span than im used to and I found my self rolling over the thumb hole and holding on to the ball a little longer. So I decided to go back to my normal pitch/span and now I still find my self rolling over the thumb but not as often but it is still happening.

I know im not giving much info like span and thumb pitch etc. but does anyone have any idea what would be causing me to roll over the thumb?

Hard to say.  Could be that you're coming around the ball more and spinning it?  The thumb hole isn't offset to one side  more?  Sorry but a video clip would help.

It could be that the thumb hole is just a bit loose, so you are applying pressure with the thumb to compensate for the loose fit.

There is a possibility that you developed a "muscle memory" under that longer span that even though the span is shorter now, your arm and hand/wrist position has already learned that release.

+1. with a longer span, maybe you were applying more pressure causing you to hold on to the ball longer. As Twohand has stated, even with the original span in place, you're still performing the longer span release through muscle memory. It may just take some practice to get the "feel" back and the release that didnt get you rolling over the thumb.

Like you said in the OP, you got used to holding onto it longer, that will cause rolling over the thumbhole.  +1 to what everybody else has said, plus try to let go of it sooner.  Start looking at the foul line and trying to lay the ball down on the foul line, that will help you get out of it quicker.
What would you be if you were attached to another object by an inclined plane, wrapped helically around an axis?

you won't catch the thumb hole by coming around the ball and lowering the track.  I think you probably started clearing the thumb too late when you went to the longer span.  Not sure why it continued when you went back to shorter span.  I would work on clearing the ball closer to the bottom of your swing, and making sure you don't hit up on the ball, or grab it too much

Are you sure you're rolling over the thumb hole, or could you be flaring into the finger holes?  If the thumping is happening well down the lane it's probably the fingers.  --  JohnP

Thank you everyone sounds like that is exactly what I am doing and JohnP, when ever I get my ball back all the oil is over the thumb or near it so close sometimes.
