New York Area Bowlers?
« on: February 18, 2008, 05:59:44 AM »
Does anyone bowl at any of the following locations, Gil Hodges, Brooklyn or Farmingdale LI Bowl.  Management of these two locations are rumored to be taken
over the bowling alley in Glendale, NY.  Looking for some input to likes and dislikes of management team and their interest in league bowlers.

If it the same family, they are good for the league bowler. I believe they also part own this alley; http://www.coramcountrylanes.com/ Coram was re-done about 6 years ago.

They bought Farmindale lanes and re-did the whole place. New lanes, seating, scoring, approaches. I think the only thing they didn't change was the pinsetters. If Glendale is run down, expect them to re-vamp the whole house with Brunswick equipment. Farmindale was a run down dump and now it's a modern house.

Check with thecrownedprince. I think he bowls in one of the Brooklyn houses.

Thanks for the input, kindly pass along any additional information you may
here.

Hogsharley: the facility is currently run by Brunswick, problem with their
lease expiring and rumored to be closing.  Brunswick Woodhaven Lanes.

Thanks Cr. Prince, Brunswick really screwed up a good thing.  Leaving league bowlers hanging with no certainty whether they were staying open dropped enrollment in the winter leagues.  I don't blame bowling be down strictly on this but it probably was responsible for 75%. Woodhaven could be a gold mine in the right hands, I was there with my daughter last Sunday and they had a waiting list @ 2 in the afternoon and this was without any leagues.  There is always walk in business, and on my bowling nite (Wed) several years ago.there were no (60)lanes to be had in case of a breakdown casuing Brunswick to ensure machines were maintained.  Please pass along any additional information or rumored info.  Thanks one and all.

I bowl at Woodhaven occasionally and there have been rumors that one of the Brooklyn proprietors have bought out Woodhaven. However, I dont think the center needs any major renovations except for the old scorers and air conditioning. The lanes are maintained pretty well but the house shot is WAY too easy. I really hope that one of the owners of Maple, Coram, or Farmingdale will implement some toughter or tighter patterns...
I ramdomly bowl at Coram and the house is known for a tougher shot. Count for about 10 pins off your average from the easier houses.

Guys thanks again.  Been receiving alot of positive feedback on potential buyers.
A tougher shot would be welcome, a little tired of bowling against one dimensional
bowlers with a 10 board area. Would like to see how some of these people on a tight inside shot...Keep the information coming.

Good news, I believe.  Brunswick has confirmed they are walking away from Woodhaven Bowl.  They are currently in serious negotiations to sell off the business to interested parties.   It is in best interest of Brunswick to find a buyer so that they could sell/lease their equipment with hopes of future equipment sales.  As it stands, if Brunswick were to walk away it would be costly to evacuate the property - moving equipment and such.  More to follow, soon.

patchogue bowl closing, end of season, land too valuable  so the owners tripled the rent effectively driving them out of business.

I just heard that the other day. I'm very surprised because the alley is not in a business district and is off the beat'n path. I also heard that Westhampton bowl, which was scheduled to close, is still open. CVS deal for the land fell through.

Riverhead is building a 28 lanes center from the ground up. I believe some of the old Sports Plus equipment may be headed there.

ive heard that woodhaven is going to stay open even though it was sold. Not sure who picked it up though. And theres a big chance that Farmindale might be sold because they rezoned that area. Because farmingdale was so close to the airport over there it was limited to being only one story high which was perfect for a bowling alley. Now that it was rezoned the buildings can now build up to a second story, ultimately making the land in which the alley is on much more valuable. Also, the airport which Farmingdale is near is up and coming and is starting to be used much more. This makes the land that the bowling alley on even more valuable for an industrial business or an office building because they have easy access to a place to ship their goods.

The lane mechanic at my house is the man who closes houses. He has said nothing to me about Farmingdale. He just mentioned Patchogue. He also did not know anything about Glendale so NY Mike, it appears Glendale is safe for now.

The new owners at Farmingdale sunk a ton on money into it. The land offer would have to be top dollar in order for them to sell. Also, the house is Conklin st. which is about 1/2 mile from the rte 110 corridor. The top money real estate is on rte 110, not Conklin st.

I used to bowl exclusively at Woodhaven when I still lived in NY. Moved about seven months ago after bowling there for many years. I've got a lot of fond memories there, even though their machines did do a number on my equipment. On the rare occasion, I was the only bowler in there at 1:30 on a Tuesday Afternoon after getting out of school early. I miss that place. I do hope it stays open.

Whitestone lanes may be closing. It's believed that the city wants the land to build a new school there. The owner does not want to sell it. If push comes to shove, NYC will get what it wants.

IMO, it's a terrible location for a school, right next to the Whitestone expressway. The city will build a pedestrian bridge over the eexpressway.

Whitestone lanes closing? That is the first I have heard. I was told JIB lanes in Flushing may be closing. Closing Whitstone for a school would be a joke. Like you said Hogs, it's close to the expressway. The movie theater is across the street and a few blocks away it the strip malls. You have enough foot traffic there already.
