New York Area Bowlers?
« on: February 18, 2008, 05:59:44 AM »
Does anyone bowl at any of the following locations, Gil Hodges, Brooklyn or Farmingdale LI Bowl.  Management of these two locations are rumored to be taken
over the bowling alley in Glendale, NY.  Looking for some input to likes and dislikes of management team and their interest in league bowlers.

any other good places to bowl at now?

if you're not far from Woodhaven, you can try Rockville Center (down Sunrise Highway a short bit) or Dani's Strike Zone (renovated International Lanes on Elmont Rd. near Old Dutch Broadway).  All new synthetics (house opened Nov 2006).  Think they're planning a PBAX league this summer (Owner purchased Kegel Lane Walker @ Bowl Expo last year).  Anything and everything else is a longer commute.

Since you're in the City, why not travel to Yonkers?  Homefield has a few really good leagues as well as a PBAX league during the summer.  Or you can try Paradise Lanes (near Yonkers Raceway) or Bowlerland (233rd St - Bronx)

Update:  Brunswick's Woodhaven close date has been officially announced as 05/18/08.  The party interested in taking over Woodhaven has resumed talks with the landlord and rumor has it, the landlord has up-ed his lease offer to 15 years.  I don't know if there has been any interaction otherwise.

For those asking about the rally, there is another one scheduled for April 26th, personally I don't know if this will have any effect if the bowling lanes stay open or not.   Below, is the article detailing the rally of 04/12/2008.

]Well, another alley bites the dust!  Van Wyck has closed!  as of 7:00am, they fenced in the parking lot.  If you have any equipment there, you have to get it on Monday otherwise lose it.  All this when I have 2 weeks of league remaining!

Yes, indeed.  Sign up in parking lot states personal property can be
picked up Mon-Fri between 3-8.  Picture ID required....... AMF employees
were told to report to 34th Ave on Friday morning.  They were paid for Thursday
and will receive two weeks severance.  Even the proshop owner had no clue.  Rumors are the hospital will be taking over the property.  I have a picture of sign not sure how to attached file.

NY Mike, to attach a file you have to first upload the picture to an off site image hosting website like www.photobucket.com, or putfile.com, or things of that nature. Then just post the link over here and we can all check it out.

re: Van Wyck Bowl - so I see some leagues ended their season early due to the sudden closing of the bowling lanes others scrambled to Cozy Lanes for availability.  What kind of impact if any, will this have on Woodhaven Lanes staying open.  Has anyone heard anything recently ?  Last I heard Saturday, was the principals were still in negotiations.

that sucks i signed the petition to keep it open probably won't help though. the only good place to bowl now is brooklyn maple lanes and shell lanes. .

Amazing to hear the names of those houses.
I learned to bowl at Shell Lanes when they opened in 1959.

Word from the potential owner is negotiations are positively progressing.  Brunswick's official walk away date is set @ May 18th, we can only hope an agreement can be reached soon. A rally was held this past Saturday and I hear the turn out was good with a lot of bowlers from Van Wyck joining forces with the Woodhaven crew to save bowling in the community.
