New/old Bowler needs some help!
« on: August 05, 2003, 02:27:46 AM »
Hi everyone! I am new to the boards, and was hoping to get some advice.. Like many people I bowled a ton in H.S. and was on the school team and what not.. But I stopped bowling for many years and just recently took it up again.. I guess I am what is considered a "tweener" when it comes to my bowling style.. I started bowling in a summer fun league to try an get me back into the swing of things.. I started out slowly as I figured I would, but my game is a slow work in progress.. In the past 4-6 weeks I have been maintaining a slow but steady climb in average to up around 162.. However, I have been having pain in my hand as late.. The pain isn't in my wrist but in the middle  knuckles and slight swelling in my thumb.. I can barely squeeze someone's hand to shake it.. Someone suggested that it may be the grips I had put in, but could it really take almost two months of bowling for pain like this? Has anyone else gone through anything like this?

Like the pain in your hand, that font and the color, red, give my eyes and brain a lingering pain. Plese be happy with black on white and the standard font.

Your span and pitches could be off just enough so that the pain acculmulates slowly causing what I'd guess was probably tendonitis. That could be quite serious of you don't have the ball adjusted soon.
First. check with a doctor.
Second, don't ignore what I said first.

Then find a new, good local pro shop by asking good local bowlers where they shop, who does their drilling. If you bowled a lot more, the pain might have shown up sooner. In any case, the sooner you fix it, the quicker the pain will not be caused by it.

In the meantime, some advil would probably  help.

Thanks, and sorry about the color..
I will see my dr. about the pain, but the weird thing is I went to a pro shop that was recommended to me by at least 10 different people who are strangers to each other.. And at that, the pro shop is so out of the way from everyone I figured it had to be good..
But in any case, I will ask around for another place and see that doc right away!

Thanks again!

You didnt mention the type of fitting you have.  Is it conventional, full fingertip, relaxed fingertip, etc?  Was it drilled recently or is it one that you had from your HS days?

The best thing to do is have the fit rechecked.  Mistakes do happen.  And as Charlest said, see your doctor.  It is possible that it may be some other type of injury that bowling is just aggravating.

I use a fingertip grip and the ball I am currently using was fitted a week or so into the league.. But I did realize that I had been using two balls, that were drilled differently, so that may also be causing a problem.. Thanks again guys, I am learning alot here on these boards..

Well, if that is true, there's always the human factor to consider. Maybe you got a newbie in the shop or the guy just had an off-day. We all do. Yes, a pro shop guy should take such into consideration, but like a god cook in a restuarant, unless you get ptomaine poisoning, you go back to a good recommeded restaurant a 2nd time.

I'd ask him or the resident Pro, the owner, to "Would you please check my span and pitches, as I am getting some pain and I am worried?" Only a bad driller will give you excuses, or tell you that you are doing something wrong (unless you are doing something very wrong?).
