Newspaper coverage of bowling
« on: August 03, 2004, 11:40:25 PM »
Hey everyone,

Not sure if any of you know this, but I'm a sports writer for a fairly large daily paper in Kankakee, IL. I'm coming up on 2 years of employment with the paper. In that time, our department has never done a great deal to cover bowling. There is a PBA Senior Regional event that comes here yearly, and a regular tour Regional event that seems to come back every other year or so. Aside from covering those events, however, the only coverage is relegated to weekly "Honor Roll" listings and brief round-ups that are contributed by one of our correspondants. As an avid bowler, I am working to increase our coverage of bowling. From that end, I'm looking for input as to what you all would like to see in your local newspaper regarding bowling. Here are some of the ideas that I have so far:

-Honor roll (Men 260+ game, 650 series) (Women 225+ game, 600 series) (YABA 200+ game, 550 series) These #s aren't set in stone

Brief weekly round up stories that cover league action and standings

Feature stories on all honor scores and other meritorious achievements

Bowler of the Week--I will choose or have readers submit names for feature stories that highlight a local bowler

Weekly Top 10 Hot List or Week's Best--Ranks the local area's best bowlers for that week (criteria TBD, but most likely on recent scores, average, helping team, etc)

Tip of the week--Either created by me or submitted by readers

Tournament watch--a brief informational listing of the various tournament action in the region

Tournament corner--This will give praise to locals who have fared well in recent tournaments

Pro's Corner--Our area has 1 PBA Tour regional pro and 2 PBA Senior Regional Tour pros, so this section will, when applicable, tell of their recent tournament progress

Technology Corner--Perhaps giving suggestions about hot equipment, coverstock prep or drilling ideas

That's pretty much all that I have right now. Feel free to make suggestions on any of the things that I've listed, and to suggest other features that you'd like to see. Any and all help is appreciated.

I did one, lasted a week.
Hubby said it wasn't techy enough for bowlers.
GUy was 26, 27 had bowled junior leagues. It was his best personal high and series. I did it more on a personal level. I did it because it was his first.
300/777 He had never bowled a 700 before that. He was shocked when he saw how close he got to an 8. I knew him, and folks for years.
Can't do those weekly, get boring. BUt for some outstanding thing.

I did one years back to promote the Junior Leagues as a feature, not sports. They gave me a neat pen set for the efforts.
My problem then was he wanted pictures and I was bad with a camera. I saw the hot shot senior division chic come back with hands in air after a 6 bagger, guess the photo didn't get, dude ran a picture of some kid putting his shoes on, he hated it. Some like attention, some don't. The chic would've dug it.

Hey Gene,

If you have the chance, I suggest picking up a copy of the Windy City bowler.  You can find them in just about every bowling alley in and around Chicago.

Don't forget to cover the juniors. Mom and Dad love to see Jr's name in the paper!!
Also - I'd suggest not basing your bowler of the week strictly on performance. For example, there's one lady in my Thursday night league that's been bowling the league since it was started THIRTY NINE years ago.
I think that deserves a writeup. So does the BVL fund raising.
So do local school/charity fundraisers....
More community stuff, less elite bowler stuff.

Contact Jay Stockman at The Evansville Courier and Press. He does a column every Sunday during the "regular" bowling season. He does a pretty nice job of covering the town, but could do a little better covering YABA.

For those of you that have bowling in your papers whether it be daily, weekly, etc., be thankful for what you have no matter how small. Here at Oklahoma City, the Daily Oklahoman is the largest published and distributed newspaper in the state and also extending in to the borders of the states that surround OK. This paper doesn't even know how to spell bowling, let alone know what bowling is and about.
