Over Under ball suggestion?
« on: November 28, 2007, 05:39:31 AM »
Hey everyone, my house lays down a very walled up shot creating alot of over under. What ball do you guys think in any company's current line up would best counters the over under?

stats: 14 mph, med-med high revs

I have a lot of success in that environment by squaring up and going old-school; Columbia Scout urethane.  If you want a core, I like my Lane 1 XXXL too.  Backends are usually strong enough that carry isn't an issue.

I'm not sure my exact ball speed, but I'd guess from your description we have similar stats; slightly slower than average speed and slightyl higher than average revs.  Tends to create problems when the backends are really moving.

There's too many to name that could tame down over/under.  I would look for something with a Low RG and a medium RG differential with a solid resin or particle coverstock.  This will help slow down the time that the ball reads the dry when coming off the oil.  Many balls fit this criteria.

highly polished reactive balls can be very over/under on a typical house shot. try using a ball without polish. use one that's been wetsanded with a 2,000 or 4,000 grit abralon pad. this will even out the balls reaction. good luck !

Well currently Im using an Action Max at 800 grit, Threshold at light polish, and a Big Blue Pearl at high polish. But Im fully open to changing the surface of the balls. What would you guys suggest I change the surfaces to, to combat over under on heavy, med and med-light oil (thats pretty much all I see, but all with very dry outsides)

I have an action maxx that's very controllable,it's a short pin ball I picked up here on a trade.it's even high polished and gives me a nice smooth curve, not good for trying to open up the lanes though.

I have had good fortune with a few low flaring balls with different surface...The XXXL plastic has bailed me out several times, as well as my Pro Purple (solid particle) and HRG (pearl with with the shine knocked off). I would stay away from flippy asym. cores and polished covers if you are struggling with over/under.

I like to take a medium symmetric ball, place the pin 1" to 2" from PAP and take the surface down to around 1000 grit.  Lay it out so you have just under 1oz of side weight and you can add an extra hole later if it's still not smooth enough.  Adjust the surface as necessary.  SMOOOOTH as silk.

I've got a Jolt Solid, with a 2" pin-PAP which goes really nicely on over-under type patterns. I've also got an impulse zone with the pin around 5" and the MB next to the thumb, around 75° which is a really smooth roll, despite the pin distance, but more useable on heavier oil than the jolt, which is only for use on medium wet/dry patterns.

For the rev-challenged, high load particle balls can work wonders.  Even polished or at a highly sanded finish, they won't bounce on the dry boards like a pearl.  You can try drilling tricks to smooth out the reaction but so much of it is cover-related that there's only so much you can do with drilling.  Take a Mammoth or AMB Particle up from the concrete finishes they come with and they won't tend to burn up in the heads.
