The posters above are correct. FYI, my experience: More side roll equals skid further down the lane and generally a more violent or angular move off the dry. More forward roll generally leads to the ball reading the lane earlier, may cover more boards, depending on the cover and core, but more of an arc reaction.
The trick is learning how to do each and when to use each. Easier said then done. Also, must be conscious of ball speed as it affects the way the ball reads and rolls.
