Subbed for the first time
« on: October 02, 2008, 11:17:22 PM »
Was asked to sub on the Thursday night league by a summer team member and thought it might be interesting, and free bowling doesn't hurt. I bowled with this team and it was fun, but the other team was calling me a "Sandbagger" which I took as a very serious insult. I am very committed to always try my best and not get down when I struggle, just try to work through it. I also knew that my summer average was higher then my ending book, and tried to tell them this before I started but was told they only use established averages. Well this league takes your Book Average from last full season as your starting average. I have only been bowling for a year or so and last season I ended with a 148. I was using borrowed equipment and learning to throw fingertip. Over the summer I invested in all new Columbia equipment and practiced twice a week as well as bowled on a summer team with a coach as a team member. Needless to say I ended with a 187 average from summer league.    Last night I shoot a 633 and was very pleased with myself, and was asked to sub again if needed, but being called a "Sandbagger" really upset me. I was only playing by their rules and if I had held back I would have hurt the team I was subbing for. I am not trying to whine, but this is "BS". They made the rules and passed them I was just doing what I was asked to do and help a team that needed a Bowler.

It sounds like a bunch of typical whiners.  You are obviously making great strides in this game.  In the begining you get big jumps in your ability.  I say too bad for them.  Keep practicing and keep getting better.

First... nice bowling! Keep it up.
Second... the best thing you could do is relax not take being called a sandbagger seriously. For what it's worth, 90% of the time i've heard someone being called a sandbagger, it was meant in a joking manner. Think 'bustin chops'.....

first good shootin, second, i wouldnt worry about what people say.  think about it, you've probrably been called worse.  i know i have(im married).  ust go out have fun and bowl your game.  i have people in my league that tell me the same thing.  i booked 178 last winter, was a tough season as i was going through wrist pain and all.  i switched to 14lb and started rehabing in the summer and finished summer at 203 and wrist pain was gone.  for awhile there i almost went in for surgery, but i knew i could beat the condition and get better, and i did.  just remember some bowlers are just plain whiners, and some do say things in a jokingly matter.  just dont worry about it, just bowl your game.

The term "sandbagger" is used so frequently these days as a rationalization for losing, that it has been waterdown to the point of being meaningless. I agree with Curly that in this case was being used to affect your bowling as in "busting chops" Remember, ignore nitwits and let your bowling due the talking.

Don't worry about it.  You have obviously put in the time and effort to get better. I might have thought you were a sandbagger too, but once you explained you have been working hard on your game I would have congratulated you on a nice series!

Thanks all,
I just talked to one of my Wednesday night Teammates and he said I would have probably shot better if they hadn't been getting in my head. My goal for this year was to end with an average in the 190s. Now I just want to shot a 700. Heck maybe I can do it next week when I sub again.

Firstly, some people use "sandbagging" and don't really know what it means.  For example, I've heard of people telling others that someone is sandbagging just because they're shooting higher than average.  That may or may not be the case here.  In your case, you just flat out got better because of having your own equipment and practicing regularly over the summer.

Now, I'm just assuming a series like that doesn't come normal for you unless you've improved even more between the end of summer and now.  So what it seems like is you just had a great night and they have to deal with it.  Maybe the summer conditions were different/dryer/harder for some reason and you just match up to the conditions that you bowled on last night better.

Although I can see your frustration if things were as you say they were but you also have to look at it from the other teams point of view. If most of us were playing someone and they bowled 70+ pins per game above their average I defy anyone not to at least think "Hmmm thats a bit suspect" as I know I would.

I mean If you had been bouncing all over the place claiming it was a "Career night" then I would be more inclined to believe the bowler but if they just shrugged off the set, given the dramatic difference in what they bowled an their average,I would look at the player with a bit of suspicion.

I would have got away with it if it was not for those pesky kids (Behind my lane) and those blasted 10 pins.

Definetion of sandbagging..

one one we bowled againes last season..

(employee of the lanes no less)
Hios average at the time  189 or there abouts

Game one  he was lined up  250's
Game two  Lost it..  gutters on spares and the whole 9  120's
Game three found the same line he had the first game  240's

That is bagging.

this is what my friend did last season:

First game: 250 something
Second game:50 something
And I don't know the third game

And he told me he was bagging, so yeah, that is what sandbagging is.

On Edit: He is a 200+ average bowler.

DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT, let a group of people get in your head, nor should you let their small mindedness keep you from enjoying the game and doing everything you can to get better.

Anyone who has been bowling for long has seen exactly what you are stating.  I hate bowling a team that is just learning the game and has been bowling for about 6-8 months with a true desire to get better because THAT IS EXACTLY WHAT THEY WILL DO.  And they will do it at your expense.

If you are just getting into the sport, you WILL have a lowish average.  And, if you truly desire to be good and learn the game, your average WILL go up because you will bowl over your average a lot as your skill level increases.

If you catch other teams on your upswing, you will beat a lot of them, especially if you are getting a high percentage of handicap.

Don't sweat it too much.  We've ALL been called sandbaggers at one time or another, whether we were or not.

Do not listen to what other people say.  You know who you are and that
you have integrity--they do not.  What others say should not have an
effect on you.
