No grips
« on: February 28, 2010, 05:20:12 AM »
Thinking about trying no grips. I buy basically only used balls. I usually just get the thumb plugged and change the finger grips. But if I want to go no grips, that would mean I'd have to get the finger holes plugged because of pitches being more important. So that's $40 vs the normal $20. Is it worth double the price?

Strikes,

I went from grips to no-grips several years ago, and wont ever go back..

Here's a few things to look at...

1- you wont ever have to buy new grips again...

2- your release will be more consistent

3- for me, when bowling alot of games, I dont have to worry about my fingers swelling and then not fitting into the grips

4- I know some guys who still use grips and after several games they, start complaining cuz thier fingers are burning or getting sore.  For me, that doesnt happen.

So for me its worth the switch.   I also use Vise finger tape and the Bio-skin stuff too...

I too switched a long time ago. I would say try it on a ball and if its a no go for you at least you gave it a shot.

i think in that case it will be better to buy a jazz or something from the low-end performance "new" on ebay for around 50 and then drill it w/o grips that way you will not be disappointed with your new(used) High performance balls

ehh pros get paid for using inserts, for them proly be the same with or without it

if u want to talk about feel, ask norm, he would say go with no grips

in my case, no grips long time ago, not going back, even tho i still have some balls with grip that i just let them sit on my bookshelf.

things to notice: u are going to lose revs and carry, but release is cleaner and u will notice right away that u are hitting on the ball instead of letting it go.

after going no grips, theres absolutely no dmg on my fingers, and of course, i got my revs and carry back once i got used to it. i would say give it a try, for firsttimers make sure u bevel on the first ball and make the edge sharper and sharper.

for practice, i have a ball drilled negative with almost no bevel on the fingers to practice swing and let go.

When a house bowler misses the mark, misses the break point and strike, for many ppl its called a wallshot. When a pro does that its call adjustment

When a house bowler gets his finger stuck in the ball and fall on the lanes, for many ppl its called lame bowler. When a pro does that its called the Machuga flop! ha i like this one.

I converted to no grips about 2-3 years ago and surprisingly (as others have also mentioned)....it eliminated any soreness in my fingers even after 18-19 games at a time, and 30-40 games or more over a few days.  In my case, I had one ball converted and liked it and then gradually switched over the rest.  But buying a cheap used ball or a plastic ball to experiment with would also be a good way to go.

Also cured me of the obessive compulsive urge to keep trying different grip sizes and styles and then changing them out on every ball in my arsenal (currently about 23 balls).  I do have one ball left with grips and occasionally I take it to the lanes just to see whether I can do better or worse, and the results are mixed.  At first it feels good cause it's easier to rev the ball, but along with increased revs comes an increased tendency to release too late in the delivery or yank the ball, and then I become kind of erratic.

No one will ever accuse me of being consistent, but I am MORE consistent without the grips than I ever was with them.

Just my 2 cents....

First off money has nothing to due with pros using grips its all about comfort. They could still use vise and turbo thumb slugs.

I just went back to using grips because I feel they are more comfortable. I have burns on my fingers from not using grips and I was tired of it. Also when you drill through plug the holes drill bigger than the actual drill bit

its just all about personal feel
some pros like them some dont
no pros get paid specifically just to use grips if they feel it hurts their game

one is not better than the other
just a matter of what is comfortable for you
