No. of Steps in Your Delivery?
« on: May 05, 2005, 01:27:43 PM »
Just curious how many people use 4-step vs. 5-step vs. other step deliveries.

I'd like to know your thoughts on why you use the delivery that you do? Is it just the way you were taught, or is there another reason (form control, psychological, etc.)???

I was taught 5-step about 25 years ago, and I find that it helps to keep me slower to the line because of the additional step. I do start further back on the lane, though.

I have friends who use 4-step, 5-step, and one who even uses 7 steps!

I used to use six...went up to 7, then my coach switched me to 5 right at the end of the season (way to go waiting so long coach!)

Although I started off using a 4 step approach back in 1996, I've used a 5 step since 1999. It was suggested to me because I was throwing the ball too slow at the time.

4 steps for me, its just seems logical.

I used to box so my left foot would always lead, and if i finish with my right i know my left foot needs to be in front in order to deliver the ball. So my left foot comes out first

So i just move the ball on the second step and im usually in time if, i tend to count my first two steps in my head. *one* Start second step, move ball *two* and im usually in time by the time i get to the line. If i grab it then bad things happen, and my timing gets messed up.

When I started bowling I made a "natural" but completely off-timing 3-step-approach (from volleyball...). Tried to fix it to a 4 step approach, but I never got the timing right (even today). But with a 5 step approach I have been doing fine since then - I need the extra step to trigger my pushaway correctly.

5 step it is more like 4.5 though because the first step is just a trigger to get me going and is only about half the length of my foot.

I use a 5 step.  steps 1 and 2 are shorter followed by a slight pause to get timing on my push away.  length of pause depending on height of pushaway.  This helps me be a little more consistant with my timing to the line.

Was 4, then 5, back to four, and now am 7 or 8, depending on how you count it.  I take a ton of small steps in place while I'm fitting my hand into the ball, and then just kinda start walking like Pete Weber.  Added the extra steps to keep myself slow.  Works pretty good.

I have always used the classic 4 step approach. It is very smooth and easy to execute. A friend my league has a different number of steps each time! I try to help him but he says my advice is usually wrong. Some teammate huh?

I normally use 4, but when my timing goes to pot, as it sometimes does, I go to 5.  When I use four I stand just behind the closest dots to the foul line.  When I use 5 I'll move up to within 5 feet of the line and force little steps until it feels right.  Then I move back to my normal spot and still use 5 for a while until things feel good, then I go back to 4.  I could not possibly explain why I don't use 5 steps all the time.
