Title: No speed too much hook, too much speed no hook
Post by: Kid Jete on February 17, 2004, 11:38:20 PM
Well I just started bowling a few weeks ago(I used to bowl when I was younger but I basically started over with new technique) and have been working pretty hard on my shot.  When I started I didn't have alot of speed but had alot of revs which is obviously hard to get far enough out to hit te pocket.  I finally get the speed I want but now my release sucks(I'm guessing it's my realease anyway) and I have very low revs on the ball.  When I used to roll the ball slower I could keep my wrist cupped longer because my backswing was so short(too short).  Now that I have a backswing that seems to be alot better and provides more speed I have a harder time turning the ball.  I have pretty strong wrists from weightlifting and golf but I can't seem to get in the right position at release to get any kind of decent rev on the ball.  I'm gonna get a decent video up in the next week or so but until then does anyone have some suggestions for me to maybe work on?  I'm headed up to see a friend tomorrow that is gonna help but I'm bored right now so I thought I would get the advice of everyone here since I know you are all bored too lol.

Thanks,

Chad

I know im gonna get reamed for this but, a wrist support may be in order here. If you cant get a good position, it will help tremendously. >.<  *hides*

AM not A CHICK OF BOWLING but I wanted to be in Manda's clique And why would I "saw" pins in half, THATS A WASTE OF PINS! I'd rather blow it over with my storm, and 21mph ball speed on dry shots.

GRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!

Learn how to throw the ball first, then if you must invest in a brace to help with the proper release.

You can always hit em hard when you've got the balls

Lefties are the only people in their right minds.

Bucs, thats what he needs help with, a release to get more revs, and a brace will put his hand in the proper position for that.

Rich, I am definately on the same page as you here.  I just want to make sure I am practice the right things and not developing any bad habits.  When I get a good video I'll get ahold of you and maybe you can host it for me for a while.

TBK and James, Yeah I am gonna steer away from braces right now, because like you said, I think getting the basics down first is the most important.  Just as it is in golf.  Of course I have been a scratch golfer since I was 16 so that comes a little easier to me lol.

kidjete, i have a suggestion that you might try . . .

at address, instead of holding the ball over your hand (your hand is at 6 o'clock), put your hand at 3 o'clock (if you're right handed), and support the ball more with your left hand.  cup your wrist slightly.  this takes alot of pressure off your right arm and wrist initially.

when you push the ball away, gently roll your wrist so that your hand is at 3 o'clock as the ball is swinging down. it's more of a pushaway, ball swinging down as the hand moves under the ball kind of move . . .

also, don't pull the ball down from the top of your backswing . . . let the ball come down with gravity.  you'll be able to control your wrist position, and keep it stronger, for a longer period of time.

just a suggestion.  if you have a coach, as them about this move . . . it worked for me while i was learning ball position throughout my swing.

That which does not kill me makes me stronger . . .

Rich, sounds good.  I'll be sure to PM you when I get it.

Bad, you're right about the 6 oclock thing.  I'll definately give that a shot tomorrow.

Ben, I was thinking of dropping down a little less of a weight also.  I'm gonna wait a couple more weeks first though and see if everything starts coming around.

Since you asked...
it's not all about "turning" the ball and producing hook. AND - more hook does not necessarily mean more revs (and vice versa).
What you want to get to here is the ability to REPEAT the same shot OVER AND OVER AND OVER AND OVER AND OVER...

Soooo - the more variables you remove, like cupped wrist, speed, swing height, the more consistent you'll be. Once you have that consistency of release, you can start altering hand positions - a little at a time - in order to find your ideal sweet spot.

kid

I will be watching you bowl tomorrow night, my guess as of right now is you probably gained speed by backswing. Watching you tomorrow night will allow me to see if I am correct, but I think you are probably forcing the ball back and in doing so you are probably deciding to bring the ball foward and that is causing your wrist to break a bit at release.

I appologize ahead of time for the huge amount of alcohol you'll need to consume after working with me lol.
