No-Tap Handicap ?
« on: June 15, 2009, 05:30:32 AM »
I've been around for a long time.  Every now and then I hear discussions pop up locally about the handicap system that is used for no-tap tournaments.

I've seen it done many different ways and heard it argued for ages.

How are your local no-tap tournaments handicapped?  Pins?  Automatic strikes?

You're bowling in a No-Tap tournament (or league) and you want handicap on top of it? Might as well put up the bumpers, too!

We use handicap for our end-of-year no-tap tournament.  It's a handicap league, hard to convince people there's a good reason not to use handicap for the no-tap.

In the end, it's just as big of a crapshoot who wins the no-tap as it is to figure who wins the league.  The bowlers averages don't seem to make much difference.

Anyone else bowl better with the regular scoring than the no-tap scoring?  I shot a real 600 long before I shot a no-tap 600.

There's still a large range of averages even in no-tap.  9 pin strikes doesn't magically make everyone perfect bowlers.

Adrenaline is right.  The majority of the No-Tap LEAGUE bowlers in our area are all well below 200 averages.

I often hear the argument that no-tap is already an advantage for the 180 or 190 bowler who is only averaging in that range because they can't shoot single pins.

Personally, I won't bowl in a no-tap tournament where "pins" are being given as handicap.  I don't feel it's an accurate method.  You're giving handicap for a no-tap tournament based on a regular average.  My theory....give them marks....automatic strikes in certain frames based on average.

Even with that, we still have the high end bowlers screaming because the lower bowlers are getting some form of handicap.  The only other solutions...two tournaments.  Run one tournament for under 200 and one for over.

Again I was just curious as to how this plays out in everyone's area.

Same for most I see out here in NorCal but if you have "any" scratch or close to scratch guys who want to participate, I'd suggest having a max score of 300 for pots at least so they won't feel shut out.
