Is this justice?
« on: October 05, 2008, 11:28:45 PM »
Hey just wanted your guys opinion on something that happened this weekend at a tournament that I
went and bowled in. It was scratch and first place was guaranteed $ 4,000.00 first place. So I bowled
and I was 75 under which there were only taking the top 20 for the cut. The squad that me and my
friend bowled there were only 6 people there and after we left they only had a total of 10 more bowl
for a grand total of 35 entries. My friend later that night around 10:30 called just to see what the cut
ended up being and he said that I snuck in 19th. I called the tournament director and he said hey I only
have $ 3870.00 for the prize fund so the top 20 will have to meet to decide how to pay that out, which I told him you have to pay at least $ 4,000.00 and on his flyer it says he would pay ALL 20 FINALIST.
Now I  stay 3 hours away and I would have to make up 90 pins just to get into the top 10 for the
next cut. So I called the tournament director back and asked him if I did not show up would I just be
given 0 for the games and finish 20 and if there was any kind of payout just mail it to me. He agreed and
said he would not drive back either. So Sunday morning my friend that was in 10th place called me and said that all 20 had met and 10th through 20th would be $ 100.00 ($120.00 was the entry fee).
Next thing I know the tournament director called me back and said that they voted to disqualify me
and not pay me anything. Talked with 3 of the 19 that were there and that was not true.

I know this is a long post but if this justice? And what should I do about it.

I know my tournament in January will not be run that way and further more if you are going to
guarantee that kind of money you need to have sponsors to pay it out.

Guaranteed tourneys are usually guaranteed with a certain number of entries, but that is usually in the fine print somewhere.

As to not paying a no-show...I have seen tourneys that DQ a no-show and I have seen some that will pay out.  It should be addressed in the rules associated with the event.  And if there were no rules published, then that says you need to ensure that you only compete in events with full disclosure upfront.

Was it a USBC sanctioned event?

If it was then without a disclaimer they would be required to pay out the $4000 and at least the entry fee to the next 19.

I don't know about the DQ.

No it was not sanctioned. There was no fine print on entries, $ 4,000.00 was guaranteed. As far as
anything in the rules about DQ for no show it was not there. Even if it were true about the bowlers
voting me out the tournament director should have final say so. Further more if this were to happen at
my tournament I would still have to pay the final 16 something wither it be a $ 1.00 or whatever.
