Normal Aches and Pains?
« on: September 12, 2005, 03:53:04 AM »
I am by no means a small guy at all.  6' 1"  285 lbs.  Yesterday, I was working on my game, trying to develop better knee bend, but more support from a solid tripod when I slide.  Usually, on my normal game, my right foot is up in the air a bit and I am pretty high to the line.  Yesterday, I was concentrating on keeping my right foot on the ground and a better kneebend, holding it until 1-3 seconds after the ball hit the pocket.

It felt amazing, brought my game back into where I felt I had a lot more momentum in the shot and it all worked itself out nice.  and plus, it felt like a lot less strain, as the only thing kind of hurting was my hip afterwards, but not too bad.

Skip ahead to this morning.  I wake up and start walking around and my knee is hurting pretty bad.  I look at it and it's swollen up above the knee on the inner part.  It only hurts when I walk on it.  I'm sure it's normal, because that much weight on it for that long of a practice session (4 games) probably put more work on the muscle than normal.  Is this a normal reaction to this kind of change?

I can provide more information later, if needed.

Yeah, the only reason I'm even slightly worried is because I don't usually swell up or anything unless something pretty bad happens, but I'm not too worried, because I know I can still bowl and be active and all that stuff.

You're kind of a big guy and the extra weight could potentially bring on some problems to your lower body in the long run.

In this sport, having extra weight could lead you to disadvantages - especially in the "other game" of longevity in the sport. If you have more weight than what your body can normally need, you could have problems with you exerting energy toward the extra weight, rather than exerting energy onto a bowling ball.

I will promote the losing weight part. Just by losing 5-10 lb will help you exert more power onto a bowling ball (and mind you, I've been having less body pains and sores after doing physical activities). I didn't believe one of my coaches that losing 5 lb would help, but after I saw what losing 5lb can do, I kept going for more. I've lost 35lb since January. Think about having to throw "two less bowling balls" per shot, for me, now.

Pain isn't good at any age, and a healthy lifestyle plus moderate strengthening exercises could be beneficial to all of our games (and lives).

Yeah, slowly, but surely, it is coming off.  I've been changing some things in my lifestyle and it's helped.  I'm down around 12 pounds in the last 2 months, so I'm happy about that one.

I'm wanting some exercises that will build up my lower body, primarily knees and hips.  Anyone know of any good ones for these areas?  My dad said something about side bends, but anything else?

Did you stick any while you were bowling?

I am 6'-2" about 350 now and I have a decent knee bend.
IF you haven't done it before it will be sore until you get used to it.

Make sure you keep your shoes slick though, if you stick while trying to bend
you'll pay for it later.

Ricky,

Luckily, I am still riding on my parents' health insurance system, Kaiser Permanente. Since hurting my elbow this past summer, I have been referred to a physical therapist, and after letting my elbow heal up a little, we started a little project to work the rest of the body while I was working with her and also since my goals are so high (my PT is an athlete herself - she competes in triathalons. a perfect "team", for say). It's become a 90 minute-per-day habit now and I must say that my game has gotten much better than what it was before even I got hurt.

If you want to have more bowling-related workouts, contact Dr. Jeff Briggs. He has a website and is a bowling coach, too.

Keep it up. Keep "winning those small victories". Keep working on smaller short term goals that lead up to that big one that you are really after.

I'm still working on my big goals but continuing to work on my goals too. Keep us updated.

Aches, pains and stiffness is one thing, swelling is not a particularly good sign. If that continues don't put off seeing a doctor.
