Higher Average? 3 Game Leagues or 4 Game Leagues?

Should one score better in a three game set or four?  Anyone? If so, which one did you score higher in and what do you think reason was?  Gom

Like Bones said, it could be likened to 4 people on a team vs 3 people on a team.  The more chance carrydown has to set in, the less likely you are to score well nearing the end of the set.

HAH!  I don't know ANYBODY now!

Being in adult leagues teaches you many things.

1.  You're not on top anymore, but there are a lot more people that suck worse than you do now.

2.  The myth about the youths having an easier shot is NOT TRUE.  I'd have an entire ring collection if it was.

3.  Drunk adults are a lot funnier than drunk youths.

I bowled both in the same house.  Three games on first shift one night and four games on the second shift across four pairs a couple days later.  Had both averages usually within a pin or two and most years, but not always, it was the four game league that the average was slightly higher.  Doesn't make any sense, because the lanes are usually a lot more challenging with the carrydown and different wear patterns due to the people on the pair ahead of you on second shift.  But that is just the way it is.  It could be just because the caliber of competition was higher on the second shift league that you had to concentrate better in the scratch league as opposed to the first shift handicap league.  Could be the teammates input too.  Who knows?

Your average will depend more on the pace of play.

Most 4 game leagues are bowled with less than 5 person teams. Generally 3 person or less. The faster pace of play will allow for higher scores.

The better comparison would be 3 person teams vs. 4 vs. 5. I bet for each additional bowler added your average will generally go down.

I have almost always averaged higher in my 4 game trio league than in my 3 game 5 person team league.

I have NEVER bowled in a 4 game league so my answer maybe OFF BASE.

What I've been seeing lately (just came out of SENIOR LEAGUES) is that as the lanes BREAK DOWN these HIGH ROLLERS have a tough time HITTING the POCKET (in the 3rd game). In my opinion the 4 gamer will see LOWER averages! From what I observe .. most switch to another BALL in the 3rd game .. those that continue with the SAME BALL .. STRUGGLE!

Joe: You got the wrong answer, but at least you qualified your response with the following:

Pinbuster and Bob Hanson hit the nail on the head -- pace is the main difference and the reason you generally see higher averages in 4 game sets. I'm doing both formats this year and it's certainly proving true for me.

STEVEN .. glad you agree with them .. let me put some figures down;
QUALIFIER .. Very rarely do you see 5 men teams .. everyone talks about leagues falling apart .. seeing a 5 man team LEAGUE to me is RARE!

4 bowlers x 3 games = 12 games
3 bowlers x 4 games = 12 games

I don't think their's much of an effect on the ally .. same amount of balls .. now PACE is different .. guess it's up to the AGE and the GENDER of the bowler to determine if a FAST PACE would be better!

I only offer my REASONING because you point out I'M WRONG .. so I thought I'd give some REASONING for my thoughts. On the other hand you offer some EXPERIENCE and I assume you know that those bowling with you are AVERAGING HIGHER in their 4 game sets then their 3 game sets .. making that ASSUMPTION I'll agree with YOU!
