NOT Enough Lane Conditioner
« on: September 13, 2004, 12:26:06 AM »
My rant for the week!

Most of us have started fall leagues last few weeks.

Any of you seeing more oil or less or about the same?

I'd say I am seeing less or about the same.  Why do ball mfgs. come out with these hook monsters?  Seems I see no one able to use most of them....even see that on the PBA tour.

The biggest normal hooking type ball I carry right now is a MoRich Onslaught and I doubt I'll use it much at all this year.  I can use a DT Thing in one house <Bruns AnvilLane 1st generation> for one game maybe game and a half then switch to Visionary Centaur or DT Thing Returns.  Other house <walled up wet/dry Guardian heads old wood, resurfaced this year> I may use Thing or right away go to Centaur and follow with Track Dry Heat.

I am now working on loft to 8' to keep balls from rolling early especially in the wood house.  Working inside in the wood house say inside of 4th arrow is an exercise in futility.  By third game have to go to 5th arrow to find any head oil.

My point is I really don't blame proprietors it's more the ball companies that run the show and push the propreitor into having more and more lane conditoner to use the mega hooking monsters that suck up all the head oil so most can't play the lane anywhere from the twig to inside the 4th.

I even looked at a LaneMasters Standard because the particle technology looks first rate, but then thought to myself....where the heck would I use it.

To me it's become less and less bowling and more and more ball throwing/chucking!  If you don't have 25 mph ball speed your done on many lane conditons these days.

Thats why you see many people using very weak pin placements especially more of the accomplished bowlers. It kind of undermines the need for high diff or exotic cores as you drill most of the flare out of them. I still like some top of the line stuff but for the most part feel there is hardly the need for it in most house leagues.

I miss dry conditions...both houses I'm at can only take my V3 strong, drilled pin in, straight up 4-5 board.  Every year it's an additionaly layer of oil.

The ball companies come out with the ultra hook monsters for those guys that get about 5 revs on the ball.  I haven't been able to drill a particle ball in about 3 years.  Currently I have a deuce and a shock trauma being my strongest, and those only come out for tournaments.  I just started league last week, and I started with my XXX and then took a step down to the Thing Returns.

Also some people just don't understand the concept of Potential energy.  I'm subbing on a team and i was trying to explain to the one guy that maybe what he needs instead of a Giant hooking ball, what he needs is something with a little bit higher RG and less aggressive surface so it could get through the front part of the lane and have something left to hook in the back.  I saw a glimmer of understanding in his eye.

Just wait a few weeks.

Everywhere I know they put out a shot and then wait for the majority of the whiners to complain and demand for a shot that they like and then you will know what to do with your equipment.

If you look at buying a piece of equipment now they will surely change the shot and you will have another ball that is useless.

A couple of ideas to try:

  • Weaker Ball
  • Adjusting your release (weaker)
  • Project the ball further down the lane
  • Move target further down lane
  • project ball directly to the breakpoint
  • Three Piece ball (Big hit)
  • Urethane Ball
  • Quit whining and bowl

Last year I bowled almost the entire first half of the season with a white dot because the oil machine was broken. Use the dry lanes to learn some new tricks!

shotmaker--Use all the bullets you listed to stay in 1-3...and I don't whine ever while bowling.  It's a discussion forum my opinions are mine and mine alone.

Over time ball mfgs. may see the writing on the wall as their mega monsters won't sell.  Most higher echelon players purchasing high Rg low differential equipment to match up better on dry lanes.

One of the points in this topic is that what I don't care for in this age of bowling is the high speed one needs to roll the ball.  Hard on the body for players of my age.  Soon to be an Olympic sport cuz it's like the discus throw.

If, I was a proprietor now a days I'd be very careful about putting down enough lane conditioner to protect my lanes.  For me this week in the one house I am working on a weaker release but also getting the ball out on the lane at least 8'.  I'd sure hate to see bowlers lofting the ball 8' out on old wood heads if I owned the place.  But, if that's what it takes....that's what it takes.

Sonic X pearl(diff.20) short and light volume, Sonic Boom(diff.29) longer and light volume.

Problem solved!

LL--I hear ya.  Going to take Thing, Track Dry Heat, Visionary Centaur and Sonic X pearl this week and see what I can come up with.  Usually can use Thing first game.  Sonic X has pin above bridge and CG midgrip right in line not kicked out

Man you should try on BIG B's new Oil!!! That's why they come out with all those Hook Monster. The Oil change very little over 12 games. GOOD EASY OIL.

Wood houses are notoriously bad about head oil issues, especially in the middle of the lane.  With so many open bowlers (and many league bowlers) chunking the ball down in that general area, they get worn faster and get to a point where the coating breaks down and any oil merely soaks into the wood rather than staying on top of the lane where it is needed.  I'd suggest looking at urethane for this house... Good luck!

9~

Actually this year the owner put down Guardian on all the heads.  He tends to take care of his house.  36 lanes pretty well.  He's a spinner with not much of a hook so he tends to put down a shot with a light volume and a tophat 10 to 10 not much outside.

What I'm seeing is heavy head breakdown after the first game.  3 man league in front of us.  Lanes conditioned at 3 PM.  We bowl at 6:30 5 man.  With all the reactive and particles equipment it just sucks up any head oil they've put down.  Best carry in the house is in the track.  Ball chuckers and no handers do well up the track....so if you can't beat 'em join 'em.  I'll try high Rg low differential balls up track after first game with mucho speed and loft.

First off, I must say that I sympathize with you because I have been fighting the same issue (lack of oil) for 2 years now. Secondly, I have found that lofting reactives, even if they are mild, only works for so long before even the puddle in the middle of the lane begins to dry up and you start getting severe over-under.

I too, like 9~, will suggest that you get a urethane for this house. With a urethane ball you may be able to eliminate the lofting or at least not have to resort to it until well into the last game of your session (although I have still found myself lofting urethane and plastic on many an occasion because the lanes got drier than dry!).

I know I have definitely had more success since I plugged and redrilled my old urethane and started throwing it again.

scotts33-All the comments are meant to be general across the board comments, none are meant to be personal. I added that one as I bowl against alot of folks in league who go off about the shot while I continue to wreck the lanes. Since you've tried 1-3, maybe a 3 piece reactive will do the trick. I gaurantee it will get down the lanes and retain energy......the trick is to get it to make the move back. Good Luck!
