Not so Typical House Shot
« on: October 13, 2012, 08:24:19 PM »
So the wood house in which I bowl, last year, oiled the lanes well enough, they were very similar to bowling on the synthetic houses i used to bowl at.  Seems to me over the summer, they did not take care of the lanes as they should have, and the shot now seems very dry.  It will start out decent, but not much will hold for a line.  I have described the situation i have found on the lanes to a buddy of mine, and he says it sounds like they are starving for oil.

Anyways, i have a new Defiant and a Versa Max, along with a barely used C-System 2.5 and my spare ball.  I used to play 3rd arrow out to about 6-10 area.  This year my team has 4 righties including myself, and a lefty.  All the other righties are aiming at the 3rd arrow this year, so i have decided to move right, throw my C-S 2.5, aiming downlane at the break point, around the 6 board deep.  Works fine, to start.  My first adjustments are left (up to 2-2.5 boards), and backwards about a half a shoe total.  I get to a point, i can't move left more, leaves a 2 pin, 1 board right leaves a 4, and i can't get away from the 10 pin when i hit it just right after 1-2 games.  I can then put my Defiant (not drilled super aggressive) where i left off with the c-s 2.5, but after about 2-3 frames on each lane, the line is dry, and i'm chasing my line left.  My versa max is about another 5 boards left with my feet at this point in the night, and only gets hotter with each shot.

I was wondering if there has been anyone in the same situation?  What did you try?  My first game the last two sets have been 234 and 257, but once the line goes away, i'm lucky to get to 190 covering all my spares.

My thought, and it'll be next league night before i can try it, is that when the c-system 2.5 starts leaving me "undeserved" 10 pins, the break point may be a little squirly cause of carry down, and i could use the defiant to "mop" the break point for about 2 frames each lane, then maybe go back to the 2.5.  The defiant would be a great option, if it didn't eat it's line up, so i thought i could preserve the line with the 2.5, if i can get it to carry the 10 after "cleaning" the break point.

Any other suggestions may be nice.  BTW - I finished last year with 202 avg.  Bowl right handed, come straight up the back on the release of the ball, usually around 15.5-16 mph with good action on the ball.

i have been on THS in an old wood lane house for years
I have plenty of hand, 17 mph
very wet/dry shot
miss outside and its a penalty, you will be on the nose every time
i just drilled a 300a with a short pin
4000 OBB finish

great push through the front part of the lane and does not jump off the friction
very predictable, that's the key to most patterns, controlling the breakpoint

you may want to polish one of those balls up for use in the later part of league night

I would first ask you if you have any bowling balls that are in the mid to low performance range and start with those bowling balls......

I'd either work with a low to mid performance range or possibly adjust surfaces on one of your balls as well.    This sounds similar to the shot on synthetics I face where if you let up on the speed a touch and miss right, you will go through the beak every time.

My C-System 2.5 is a pretty light ball, especially when playing a power down and in shot.  I'm playing far right because of the three other people on my team wanting to play where i'm most comfortable, not to mention others.  My league is mostly old men who play in the range of 12-15 board at the arrows.  I'm shoving 2.5 out with speed at around the 7-10 board at the arrows and breaking it around 6.  I've noticed with the 2.5 that it has a "wall" that if try and use it with my feet any farther left, it's nothing but corner pins there.  It pretty much likes the down and in shot.

I'm not sure of changing the surface of the Versa Max or Defiant, as not only could the lanes change one week and be back to "normal", but i also go to the Michigan State Bowling tournament, which has a swamp for a pattern.

I thought about adding a pearl or even a urethane to the aresonal, but i am so close, and I have a theory for the next time i bowl, that if i send the defiant over the break point a couple times, it could clean my break point out, and my 2.5 will have a clean spot to break on an not be so squirly.

The common response so far to your question is that you need a weaker piece
I know you feel that you are close, but it needs to be a comfortable, effortless shot
with the right piece of equipment, not a forced, throwing harder, "power" shot as you describe.

You could probably get a weak piece to "almost work" on a higher volume, longer pattern, but you truly need the equipment to "match" your game AND the lane conditions.

That is just the facts of today's game.

Find a competent driller that knows your game and the house you bowl in and then get a new piece

you should be able to get something that will fit your needs for 150 drilled

300T might work, Cyclone is even cheaper and a very good ball for its price point,
lots of options out there

But you will be "close" all year with that stronger equipment on that pattern

OP:  Why aren't you playing 3rd to 4th arrow and catching all the head oil you can?  Something clean thru the front with a moderate to low response to friction, from inside may be worth a shot.

I am not playing 3rd cause i have 3 teammates in the same spot, and when i was playing there, i can only live there for about a half game, then it's figuring out where to move on a shot that is not breaking down "normally" at all.  most of the high hitters in the league are struggling so far this year, except the down and ins.

The 4th arrow i haven't had a chance to play with that spot yet.

Please dont take this the wrong way but when you say you cant "live" there do you mean you want to stand in the same spot for the entire league night? And if you can only be there for about a game why not be there for that game them either move left and slow your ball speed down a little and use the friction created to your advantage or move right and throw it harder.

These type of trials and errors are what make you a better bowler. Why do so many bowlers expect every week to be the same. stand in the same spot throw the same ball and never move and expect to average 220? Once again please do not take this as a bashing or anything other than some advice and my opinion on similar situations that I read and hear all the time.

My old wood lanes THS typically will have 20+ 300's and maybe 6 or more 800's every year
the up the boards spinner types usually dominate that list
these same guys would be lucky to average 170 on a sport pattern
there are a few of us who turn and swing the ball, but you really need the right piece in your hand

currently, I am using a JET, 300a and i will have the U2 classic to try tomorrow night

i am usually 15 to 7-8 and move in from there
rarely do I have to get into 20
the weaker equipment I am using wont recover from there

I did throw a 300 with my JET a few weeks ago
started to bring the JET every week with a fresh 4000 grit surface and it has made all the difference in the world

playing at 15 to start really takes the wet/dry out play for me
my team mates are speed dominate and throw
706a
arson pearl
grape vibe
JET
505a
cyclone

mostly weaker stuff

Rather than starting outside of everyone else, and adjusting into their "dry" as you try to move in deeper, I would suggest starting in the same area as the rest.  From there, I would quickly move inside of the rest 2-3 boards and use the dry area they are creating.  This allows you to catch more head oil, helping to get ther ball down the lane.  Keep up with adjustments throughout the end of the first/second games to stay even with/deeper than the rest.  Rather than using you weakest ball, use your medium or strongest.

Strapper hit on what I was noting.  I would start in at the 3rd arrow and migrate in (sort of a leap frog game) moving left.  You MAY have to make 1-2-3 board adjustments as the pattern goes.  It sounds like you are on a low volume shot.  I would also use a ball with a medium strength coverstock to begin with, I like my Victory Road here, and go left as soon as I see symptoms of it checking up early in the midlane.  Remember, keep your mind open to a move to stay ON TOP of the transition.

If that doesn't work, try to ball down to a slingshot (or something equivalent) and stay in the dry.

Simply put, I think you need to get in deep and open the lane up.  Don't be afraid to.  If that isn't it, i'd ball down to a Slingshot (or equivalent) and play a line in the toast, adjusting hand position somehow.

Allow me to echo everyone else. If you're playing a part of the lane where you go 4 pin, miss in and go 2 pin, and keep leaving 10 pins due to angle, you are playing the wrong part of the lane. If you can miss in and leave a 2 pin, try moving your feet back right, and playing the hold. This would mean you would have to tighten up your angles. Not having seen you bowl, if you really are up the back, getting in and wheeling it might not work for you. Maybe rough up the surface of the Versa max, playing the hold, and seeing what happens?

is that when the c-system 2.5 starts leaving me "undeserved" 10 pins,

I didn't know there was such a thing. If you listen to it, the 6 pin will tell you why you "deserve" that 10 pin.

I realize the six pin tells all.  By "undeserved" i meant everything felt right on delivery, and i didnt pull or push it, and the 10 is a surprise.  I can feel when i screw up my release and i know theres a ten on the way.

And with my 2.5, i can usually stay in the same 3 board area for nearly 2 games , but once my 2.5 starts with 10 pins, i havent found its adjustment off it, and my first game of 240+ gets coupled with a 190 clean game.  I know how to adjust, i grew up bowling in a wood house 15 ft from a lake.  But this pattern thats been on the lanes plays like nothing ive seen.  Most of the "swingers" are having issues too.
