Can you tell me how to get....
« on: March 03, 2004, 01:00:29 AM »
how to get to Team USA? LOL! (Sorry guys, I couldn't pass this one up!) Really though, other than just being flat out talented, what steps does one take to go for the gold? Also, even though these are amature type championships, do you still have to be a border line pro to make it? Haven't you ever noticed that a lot of people go to the tour after being on Team USA?

One thing I'm really concerned about is the time envolved. Can you keep a job and go Team USA? I work with the federal government (going on seven years now...) and I recently got engaged, so I don't plan to do anything crazy even though I love the sport. I'm 33 now and I've noticed that they have someone on the team this year who's in their early thirties. I forget his name, but I know he works in communications if I remember correctly. Does Team USA really have everyday bowlers like this trying out for the squad?

What do you do if you make the team, quit your job to bowl full time? I mean, I know that expenses are taken care of for the team members when the bowl, travel, etc., but how do players deal with the financial responsibillies of home? Do you get paid to play on the team or what? I want to be good enough to bowl in the big amature tournaments and win some money, that's a given. But, there's still this little voice in my head that wonders if I could represent my country. Hell, I did in Desert Storm/Desert Shield, why not on the bowling alley?

Please give some insight to this, becuase when I get back into the game this time, I'm in it for real! Thanks again.

When you've moved up, moved back, adjusted left and right, cupped, flattened out, have thrown everyting in your arsenal, and the pins still don't cooperate, just say, "Aw to HELL with it!", and throw the ball!

I am not American so I obviously don't know a great deal about this but here I go anyway. If I remember correctly roughly half of the members on Team USA is picked directly from the top three, four or five positions in the National Amateur Championships that run in January. The others on the team get picked on their merits in general.

It seems that the chances of being selected are greatly enhanced if you have participated and done well in the big international amateur tournaments.

I entered a Team USA thing in my state tourney a couple of years ago.  I did well enough to go bowl in a regional qualifier for this area.  I didn't win but I bowled well.  I placed 2nd, the winner gets a trip paid for to the USA championships to try out for the team.  You can go to Reno, pay the entry fee and bowl the tourney.  It just costs more.

Here is some more info:
